Hi,
Has anyone used/purchased the £200+ hand-held obd reader?

The reason I want to go down this route is so that I can use same on my Saab and on my Peugeot van….. the both need reading to clear some historical faults so, trying to get a device that will suit the A2 and my other vehicles.
Cheers,
Paul

VCDS can do standard ODB also. But if it’s just for basic odb features you can use something like this

This is what I have in mind as it is a small portable device, lifetime upgrades and means I can use throughout all of the vehicles I have, no faffing about with a laptop or other….. if they are good enough for a garage good enough for me. Means I can stop paying to have anything read at the garage which means £100 charge or there abouts. Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Paul

Still a gamble. Will it be fully compatible with the A2 or only generic OBDII codes? Will it be the same on other manufactures also? Reading between the lines it claims to be fairly universal. As for good enough for garages that I would not be so certain.

Best bet is find someone who has used a similar model on an A2 and your other vehicles and get their honest opinion. Or at least try to search for genuine reviews on this scanner and what it was used for. If just doing service resets and turning off warning light then may be ideal but for more diagnosis really not sure.

Certainly would be tempted to try VCDS in generic OBDII mode on the other manufacturers after all this may give the same codes.

End of the day your money so you have to be sure to get what you want / need.

Good points raised, thanks. Will check with a mechanic I use to ascertain what is best reader for Audi and other vehicles👍

Launch or autel would be the two brands id stick to for a reasonably priced scanner that covers all models. Check out aliexpress, they generally ship from European countries aswell as China. I have a launch x431 v pro for my general scanning but I still would only use my VCDS on any vag stuff. Launch would have a similar effort to what you linked on amazon, maybe a bit more expensive but a known and trusted brand.

I run my VCDS on a linx 1020 which is a 10" Windows tablet with detachable keyboard. It also has full size USB port. I have elsawin on it too.

I use OBD11 which is a plug in dongle and a phone app If you upgrade to Pro for about 20 pounds it seems to do just about anything that VCDS does
I have it too, and it is the equal of VCDS for error code scans, but support for basic setting, and controller testing on older models is limited.
If you must have a non wired VAG reader, OBD Eleven is the best.

Hi Paul. I bought the iCarsoft CR Pro last year (before my A2 venture) from Diagnostic World to clear a recurring fault generated on my motorhome by my misuse of the Toad Alarm. I think it cost me £230 at the time. Like you I wanted something I could use on multiple vehicles and so far its doing OK. Obviously not VAG specific but has paid for itself many times over in not having to get a garage involved. Reset Fiat based Motorhome alarm several times, tracked Yeti reversing sensor fault immediately, rear center left, cleared all the faults generated after a friend let his battery voltage get too low on a Captur, and also helped me wade through the multiple faults on my A2 when I got it, leading to replacement CCU and drivers door lock. So far, touch wood, it's getting me by but I'm sure If I do need VCDS access I might have to rethink.
If you're coming up to Georges you can have a look and see what you think.

Hi Dave,
Just so happens that my Motorhome is also a Fiat based 130 Ducato. So although I have had no faults on the Ducato it is good to know. I have faults on the Saab and Peugeot and not forgetting the A2.
With the A2 did you use the reader for an eml fault?

Cheers,
Paul

To tell the truth Paul I don't remember but don't think so but possibly? It did startle me with the level of detail though. When I refitted the drivers window after inspection of the lock the meter picked up that the cabin pressure was not correct because I hadn't fitted the door seal correctly.

I had no idea there was a cabin pressure sensor in an A2 ...
Mac.

I'm only saying what happened to me and assumed there's some way of doing it as when I reset the door correctly the fault disappeared. Unfortunately I didn't record the event as there were so many faults before fitting the replacement CCU and door lock. maybe some day I'll discover how it worked.
