Handbrake cable AKA Guide tube replacements part number 8Z0 711 951 C change

My handbrake cable broke during the MOT test, it’s a night mare to find this part and four different part supplier delivered the wrong part. Just writing this guide to save someone else going through the same.
Only Audi deal can get you the right part for £45 for the cable!.

First: Audi A2 has 2 hand break cable, first cable going from handbrake leaver to the middle of the car just under the silencer and protective metal mesh. The primary cable (leaver to the split ) is called “Guide tube” part number is 8Z0 711 951 C
Then cable has (slitter ) connector to attach two cables that goes to each of back weal.

Replace procedure.

1. put the rear on the car on axle stand,
2. Remove center console around handbrake leaver.
3. Undo two bold and remove hand break leaver.
4. Remove plastic clip and pin to free the hand break cable form leaver.
5. Go under the car, remove protective metal covers (after lots of WD45 )
6. Undo all the clips and bolt holding the hand break cable under the car.
7. Pull the guide tube out.
8. Putting a new guide is a bid difficult due its getting caught under the carpets, but after wiggling for a while you can do it.
9. The reverse procedures to for fitting. The adjust lockout on the hand break leaver to get right tension.

Having just done this, I'd like to add a tip that i found useful. To get the guide tube back in with no bother at all i threaded a piece of wire up through the hole into the cabin. I then attached the handbrake cable to the end under the car and pulled that through. A gentle push on the guide tube and the plastic appeared in the cabin without any fiddling or fuss.

I also didn't remove the heat shield. Just undid it and bent it around the exhaust.

It's nice having a handbrake that works again.

As an aside, there were no parts snapped, just a bit of fraying of plastic cable cover and likely a bit of stretch, unsurprising for 175000 odd miles. Hopefully this will finally see an end to my binding brake too.

Rear cables differ between drums and discs
Where the front to rear join up u need two new clips/connectors as they rust

I managed to spot my rather rusty hand brake cables , and paid WOM autos to carry out the works , it was money well spent ...... by the way , mine has discs at the rear

Regards

Sorry not to hand
Usually order clips and cables at same time
from Tps will check paperwork
Possible that some aftermarket suppliers include them but do check

I just bought a new nearside cable and a clip from Crewe Audi - £20 delivered.
I’ll have a look for the part numbers in the morning.
Mike

For my car (X Reg) the part numbers were:

8Z0609721F (nearside cable)
8z0609722g (driver side cable)
1H0609734F (clip)

Try Crewe Audi through this site quoting chassis number.

Got the left and right and several clips and some spring type things from tps and got change out of £40 , , hope don't need the top part as it's £40 on its own

Dragging up an old thread - Audrey has persistently exhibited signs of a dragging handbrake which I've tried replacing the rear calipers and also greasing the handbrake cables in an attempt to improve matters when this didn't solve the problem. So I've decided to go nuclear:

I had previously bought, via the club group order faciliated by the legendary @Rickmeister, a replacement centre / guide tube cable from Audi Tradition "just in case". I now have replacement Borg and Beck wheel cables for the rear disc brake setup common to TDI90 and FSI coming from eBay / "parts in motion". My plan is to replace the bl**dy lot and be done with handbrake problems for the foreseeable!

My question is, how much of a faff is this job and how long will it take a semi-competent amateur? Any need for special tools or "hot tips" ? Thanks in advance.

I have taken a look at this thread but am still unsure whether I should attempt myself in the limited time I have or entrust yet another job to my friend's garage (who turns up the night before, takes the car and then delivers it back at the end of the day when the job's done!).

Hi all,
Handbrake question. Is the guide tube assembly the same across all models please and if so what is the part number?
I would like to obtain a couple for our two 1.4 TDi 's and wonder if there is a group order at the moment.

Hi there, another group order is imminent but if you need a cable at short notice, perhaps a request to loan one from another member could give a quick solution. There will be an order, watch this space.

On AT its called "Guide Tube" 8Z0 711 951 C

Thank you Rickmeister, Not desperate yet but getting imminent.
I'll keep an eye open for the bulk order and would ideally want two, (not being greedy, we have two vehicles).

Thank you for the follow up.
