I bet your A2 behaved impeccably on the journey ‘home’. :) A great couple of photos, memories and way to celebrate Christmas.

It’s done pretty well actually. One blown headlamp bulb on the Luxembourg border (which caused half an hour of unpacking and repacking five people’s luggage and Christmas presents) but nothing else except 42.5 MPG from the FSI and easy motorway miles from the Timmus-fitted cruise control. The (sport) seats and driving position are very good as well.

Kids weren’t so happy, but how often do you get to take a car back to where it was made?

This was the last car I had that came from Neckarsulm.....

That’s right: NSU was based there before it became part of Auto Union I think, more incredibly futuristic cars with unique features, low drag coefficients and ridiculously fragile engines. I’d like to see how our A2 FSI would fare with a Ford V4 (common replacement for the failure prone ****el engine)! Maybe a nice Ford 1.0 3 cyl. Turbo as a modern upgrade...

Crikey. Look what the autocensor did to my description of the rotary engine! I had a Ford V4 in my first Saab and it was a cracker.

Only ever had the ****el, beautiful smooth engine in an advanced car. The chaps who serviced my car, under the railway arches at Vauxhall, converted many Ro80s to mostly Ford V4, but also turned out a few with the Ford V6. The best (=fastest) conversion they did was to enlarge the inlet and exhaust ports on the rotary, throw away the Solex carb and replace it with a Webber :). Went from 115 to 170 bhp and fuel consumption fell to 9 mpg :(.

Sorry for going off topic and down memory lane.
