Happy new owner 05 TDi Ebony Black

That gear cost me £112.58 + VAT. It is barely used. You can have it for £100.

Danilo .... luckily you have not made a decision on that offer of mine .... I am afraid that I will have to withdraw it, because, you see .... I have made a bit of an error in costing. As Tom had pointed out, there are two components involved in this change of 5th gear ... There is the speed gear, 02D311158, priced at £112.58 , and the additional mating gear, 02D311161, priced at £63.26. Both carried VAT @20%, which made a total purchase price to me of £211! So I feel that the £100 that I was asking for was somewhat too generous! I think that £150 is a fair costing .... sorry about that ....

In short, if you think a longer 5th gear would be a good choice for you, I'd take David up on his offer. If you do a lot of motorway miles, the longer 5th makes the journey so much more relaxing due to reduced noise and vibration. You'll save money at a rate that will see you get a return on your investment, which is unlikely to happen with a 6-speed conversion unless you plan on doing starship mileage over the next decade! Reduced engine wear is of course a perk of reduced revs, no matter what your choice.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks for the info Tom. Having taken it all in I think I will take David up on his offer. For the record I usually keep my cars until a starship mileage has been reached!! I have just sold my 10 yr old A4 Avant TDI with 312,076 miles on the clock!!!

Haha! Maybe you should be going for the 6-speed conversion after all!? That A4 Avant did well. :)

Thats ok David. No worries. Will still take you up on it as the longer 5th is still my preferred choice. Whats your preferred payment method? Let me know .The 6 speeds sounds attractive but I've asked myself the question... 'Why not buy a car with 6 gears in the first place?!!!! '

Thanks

Danilo

Perhaps, haha! though I've just decided to take David up on his revised offer. Out of curiosity, have you had any problems so far with the conversion? Any idea of its long term reliability? This would matter alot to me due to the length of time I keep my cars! Was sorry to see the old Avant go. I drove to Italy and back in it 4 times fully loaded with 2 mountain bikes on the roof and it ran like clockwork! :)

The only issues that have been encountered so far have been due to poor workmanship; there was a guy in the USA who did the conversion himself, resulting in the cogs chewing themselves to bits.

The A2 (and many other VAG vehicles) use an 02J gearbox. VAG's own transverse 6-speed 'box is the 02S/02M. The kit of parts essentially transforms the 02J 'box into an 02S 'box. The kits were originally intended to be used on VW Transporter vans (T4 and T5). Cumulatively, these vans have now racked up millions of miles without issue. The quality of the parts is as per OEM. As long as the work is done by someone who really understands gearboxes, there shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers,

Tom

Firstly, Tom, apologies for the " " around your name .... just a grammatical error! Now, regarding this question from Danilo :- "Out of curiosity, have you had any problems so far with the conversion? Any idea of its long term reliability?" A problem with my conversion has been a very difficult and "notchy" change from 1st to 2nd gear, especially from cold. I would like to ask the other owners of the 6-speed conversion A2's (Tom and Mike?), what is their experience of the gear-change action between those gears? I am in discussion with "Stealth Racing" regarding this ....

Hi Danilo,

Have you got any photos of the car's interior?

Cheers,

Tom

Not something I've seen myself (or heard of on the TDIClub 6-speed conversion thread either).

That sounds like it could just be the linkage adjustment slightly out?
The gear linkage adjustment on the A2 is relatively easy to do. I believe
