Hard to launch 1.6fsi

Had our a2 nearly three years now with no problems except that it always seems tricky setting off.
Its almost as if its got an on/off switch rather than an accelerator - either revving its nuts off or nearly stalling.
Its a bit like launching a high revving motorbike & greasy hill starts can be very entertaining.
Car hasnt been modified & is fitted with good pirellis on 16" standard wheels.
Once its moving its fine. Tried its with the traction control on & off with no difference.
Is this how they are or does it need a trip to the main dealers? My local garage cant fault it.

It sounds like you're in need of a bit of proper A2 specialist knowledge and I'd say this was a throttle body issue - an alignment should sort the start-off hesitancy out.

I'm not a million miles from you, so if you want to pop down, I'll sort it for you.

Cheers,

Mike

I'm having exactly the same problem, Interestingly this issue only occured after I moved from Unleaded to Super unleaded, I thought that it was maybe the ECU learning the difference in the fuel but have since went back as it didnt improve.

Is there much to an adjustment Mike? my friend a local mechanic may do it for me

thanks

David.

That sounds more like the 1.4 petrol, TBH. When I drove pummy's FSI, it was so much easier to take off compared to my 1.4 petrol!

Hi,

As has been mentioned - if you are new to the A2 FSI - this is one of its traits. However if it's something that has suddenly started happening then probably worth investigating.

Incidentally, Vince @ Stealth Racing (and presumably other reputable tuners) can smooth out this behaviour via a remap.

Personally I've got used to it and adjust the amount of throttle accordingly when pulling away - usually a gentle additional push on the throttle just as the revs start to dip.

I'm not sure what the more modern FSI engines are like in the VAG group - presumably they are tuned differently to avoid this trait.

The car has always been like this & to be fair i normally drive a mitsubishi animal which has 400nm of torque but i have driven other fsi variants such as polos & golfs which dont have this problem.
Looks like i either live with it - get it remapped - or take it to skiptons place for a sort through (is this you home or work location ?)

It certainly felt like it when you were doing the boy racer bit on the local drag strip :)

The FSI in the A2 is only shared with the system in the 1.4FSI 85PS Polo from 2002 - 2004 (four-headlamp one) as it's direct injection and lean-burn; the FSI used in other VAG products is actually quite a different beast.

Actually, the BAD engine was only ever used in the 1J1 and 1J5 Golf and Variant and the 1J2 and 1J6 Bora and Variant between 2002 and 2005.

The Polo was a 1.4 (as you said) not the 1.6 as in the A2.

You are right though - the 1.6 FSi used by Audi and VW now are completely different beasts.

Cheers,

Mike
