Head unit change questions.

Hi all i am new to this forum so hope all this makes sense.

My mum has just purchased an a2 1.4 tdi and the only thing missing for her is a cd player. After reading many posts on this site about changing it i thought i would ask a few questions.

At the moment she has a chorus head unit with a tape. Now after reading you can add a 6 changer but have to change a panel in the boot i find this becoming an expenisve addition. But maybe the only one.

So the questions--

1, if i buy a concert 11 cd head unit off ebay is this the same colour plastic as the chorus so that it matches the dash?

2, i have seen and been offered a symphoney 6 changer in dash player, but after reading this would involve moving the standard heater controls down, but then wont look right as the dash rounds off at the bottom. So can the new face plates be purchased? Or is the symphoney unit an area which is best to stay away from?

3. if i decide to go for a 6 changer can someone please confirm part numbers and prices for the parts needed .

Thanks Mike

Hi Mike
Option 1 will probably be the easiest and cheapest. I would visit your dealer and check out the part number of the A2 Concert head unit and ask which other cars use the same part. You will then know exactly what to look for on e.bay. Beware of sellers claiming their gear fits a whole range of Audis - it usually won't.
Option2 is a non starter. In theory you need a new dashboard with a double din slot plus a new heater control panel. Some German club members have reworked the dash to suit but i'm not sure how drastic this is. The fascia plate on the A2 Symphony is unique so head units from other Audo models won't fit. The radio also uses a diversity aerial system which your car won't have - not sure how well it will work without it.
Option 3 is expensive (about £450 in parts) and a lot of work. The A2 and TT use the same CD player. Units from other Audi models will probably fit but may need reworking to suit the different orientation when mounted in the car. CD's may skip if this is not done) Other club members may have the details.

Hey Mike,

re cd players just a thought have you got an i-pod? If so have you considered getting an I-pod link rather than a cd changer or new head unit. There's a recent thread posted (under audio) about two available options that interface through the back of the stereo, charge the i-pod and give you control of the i-pod. Might work out cheaper than a new head unit or auto changer and you've got all your tunes on hand! Anyway just a thought.:)

If you decide to get a Concert II, make sure it is compatable with the age of your car. They changed the wiring system during 2001, and getting a current Concert II to work in an earlier car is complicated - I know, because I've had it done! You need to buy a special interface from a guy in Germany on Ebay, and then do some wiring modifications.

Hopefully, if you order from Audi you should get the appropriate unit (hopefully!) but they will want the thick end of £600 for a unit that is worth about £300 in normal terms.... I think I spent nearly £400 on a Concert II on ebay, plus the adaptor, plus fitting - so perhaps the Audi dealer is the best option if you want to have an original Audi unit, as we did. THey do sound quite nice...

I got a Sony 6 disc auto changer and a box of tricks thingy on the internet, it simply plugged in the back of the Audi head unit, the changer sits neatly in the glove box. Job done.... Cost approx £175.

I'm thinking of buying a Concert II CD player - found one for sale locally for 300 euros, but I don't know if it will fit my Audi A2. Should the part number start with 8Z0 (for A2) or other models will work as well (like A3, A4, etc.)?

Ideally it should be an 8Z part, others will fit, but you may find that you need to trim the fascia to shape.

Cheers,

Mike

I think I found a cheaper solution to my problem: an FM modulator. It's really cheap (around 20 euros) and I can listen songs from my mp3 player directly on the car radio

a fm modulator this is what i use in mine and it is fine it fits on to the bottom of the ipod
it is made by griffin and called itrip it is powerd by the ipod

Can anyone tell me where the lighter charger (or whatever you call it) is placed in the A2? The FM Modulator is about 10 cm tall and it has to be connected to that so I’m afraid that something could get in the way (like the handbrake, if the charger is placed beneath that, for example).

Found a picture, is this the charger, next to the handbrake?

Got it, thanks :)
I just need it to plug in the Modulator, so it doesn't matter if it has a lighter or not :)
