Information Headlamp bolts.

Hi

My son told that he is having problems with his headlamp bolts. They are very rusty and he is not comfortable putting them back on.

So I contacted Tom at Crewe Audi and he has confirmed that they are still available (both sizes. Around £1.50 each.

So that is great news. Many of us have rusted ones and so being able to fit new ones is great.

I bought 10 sets of two (enough for 5 cars) thinking that I could sell them to members (at £1.50 each of course, no profit) at socials or if they come around for any other bits / work, to make it easier for people.
I will need 6 sets of two for family A2s so I will have enough for two more cars.

It might be better to order them direct from Crewe Audi. But if it will help I will order a lot more to help others.

That's great news Steve - I'll probably get a few sets ordered myself as could do with some "shine" under the bonnet after 13 or 14 years of grime build up.

At that price, I'd take a set off you Steve if you elect to buy an over-subscription. I'd collect at the Wales social, if not before.

No worries if there is no other interest, don't get extra just for me.

Cheers,

Darren

@iamlost666 I had trouble getting one of my rusted bolts out that was already rounded out. In the end I soaked the bolt for a couple of days with plusgas penetrating fluid and with a struggle got some thin pointed nose mole grips on the remains of the head. First try to slightly tighten the bolt then slightly try slackening it. I repeated this perhaps 30 times until it started to come out. More penetrating oil and a big cup off tea later and it slowly started to come all the way out. Hope this helps. You could always CAREFULLY use an impact driver and a star or torq bit that is a tight fit, but be carefull you do not damage the mounting lug....

Steve, I'd be interested if you still have a set spare. Will cover postage etc of course.

Let is soak for a long time and keep adding to drench it then try to tighten slightly . This breaks the corrosion in the threads, then try to undo using the mole grips to give you more leverage.

...over here at my side of the fjord they use a lot of chlorides on the roads during wintertime to prevent ice and snow... so headlamp bolts are scaringly corroded on all A2 I have seen. When i finally got them off on my first A2, it became a standard solution to grease these bolts well with water resistant grease.
Also use this method underneath the car on clips etc

Maybe something for UK conditions too ?

I have previously had success using a dremel to cut off two edges of a round screw head and using an adjustable wrench on the flat faces to turn it enough to get a start while also putting pressure on the Torx driver. Destroys the head obviously.
