its much simpler and cleaner to remove the two torx screws and then remove the head light unit from the car
Really is a less than 2 min job
I was going too , having removed them to replace and upgrade the bulbs ,but I decided it was going to be easier for me to polish the light in a fixed position . My other thought was to remove the bonnet but decided against it as it didn't take long to tape up . I think if I didn't have access to a warehouse / garage and been stuck outside I would of gone that route.

A good job, well done Russ.

Picking up Paul's point, it is very easy to burn through the masking tape and tarnish the paint on the bumpers and wings. Removal is a recommended option unless very careful and multiple layers of tape have been added to protect against such errors.

Good point ,I have done it before on other vehicles so knew to be carefully , I also tend to keep away from the edge .

I did it with the bonnet off but taped before sanding and the masking tape did not stay on very long when i added the water ? so I hade to re mask before rubbing
