heat/ ac controller for gasoline vs. a diesel models

Hi There,

I just bought a 2001 A2 (gasoline) in excellent condition but the heat/ ac controller acts buggy because the buttons are worn out. I found a used replacement online that looks to be in really good shape. However, it's from a diesel version of the A2.

Is there any difference between the heat/ ac controller for a gasoline vs. a diesel model?

From the information that I can gather the Audi A2 with a 1.4 engine used the same heat/ ac controller bewteen 2000 - 2005, but I can't find any info about gasoline vs. diesel models.

I could pull the heat/ ac controller and check the Reference Numbers with the Reference Numbers on the new unit, but I'd rather avoid the hassle of pulling out the controller, and then putting it back in until I can find the correct controller.

Hoping someone here has any insights.

They are interchangeable. Petrol or diesel.
Make sure that you have the right one though. Some are for the “Double DIN” dashboard (rounded corners at the bottom) and “single DIN” ones that have square corners.

you can make them fit either type of dash (double or single DIN) but you need to do some filing of a single DIN one to round off the bottom edges to make it for a double DIN dash.
fitting a double DIN one into a single DIN dash results in some gaps at the bottom.
If the one you are buying is in excellent condition it will either be an early one (not soft touch) or a very rare excellent later one (post 2001) with unmarked soft touch coating

Thank you, this was most helpful. You also answered another question I had but did not realize at the time. I just discovered the issue around the double and single DINs
I was reading the post by Kleynie from 2018 showing how they did a single DIN to double DIN conversion without removing the dash.

I'm thinking about trying this myself.

... but filing the corners of the climate controller would be necessary for me unless I could find a double-DIN climate controller for sale.
