Heater controls - melt down

Had some radio wiring and indicator relay to sort so whipped the centre console bits out.

On attempting to remove the heater dial controls I couldn't. To cut a long story short I managed to get them out only to find the reason I had trouble removing them was that the back of the panel had melted and deformed.

There was also a connector with a fat white and fat red/black wire that was fried and bare, with lots of green residue on it, which was actually melted into the holder.

Used pliers and managed to remove it to find that the heater circuit board was all scorched as well.

Now consulted the wiring diagrams and I believe the wires in question are for the heated rear window.

Now what could have caused this little episode of scorching / melting on this connector / circuit board???

The rear window heater has been working fine so im now very confused.

Should I replace the control panel+connector?? (£100) :(

Also can you get the connector pins on there own or do you have to buy wire packs with the pins/wires and then splice onto old wires???
