Heater not giving a very high temp ? tdi

Noticed on Sally’s a2 today temp running normal 90 turned up heater would only blow warm air turn up the ac to 24 deg didn’t get warmer cycled it down to cold works fine ...ideas please just would not blow hot ..?

It could just be the temperature control flaps not operating correctly Paul. I take it you've already tried the rotational fix. ?

How hot do the feed and return pipes feel going to and from the cabin heater radiator?
if these feel good and hot then most likely the temp control flap not moving fully open or closed

I will check that tomorrow thanks ? tis them flaps is it not ?..

You may just be able to see the temperature control flap arm by looking between the glove box and the center consol, but if you remove the glove box you can see far more.
Using Andy's @ajsellors picture he has kindly labeled up the parts....

VCDS can show if the flaps are moving correctly.

The temp gauge is also somewhat 'magnetic' around the 90. On the CoulourDIS on my Storm I observed the actual temp being anything from about 82 when the gauge showed 90. So it might have been running a bit cool also.

we had this problem on one of our FSI's, the heater would only start throwing out heat when set close to hi around 27, any lower and not much heat came out. i seem to vaguely remember, i cleaned the tiny fan in the climate climate control unit (full, really full, of dust) i think that improved things..

Hi nod,
I found my climate sensor fan like that also on Saturday, cleaned with a brush & compressed air blower in a tin.

Well I had another go at cycling the Aircon and now it’s on hot all the time it’s cooking in there and you can’t go lower temp Sally was driving earlier the window down at least it’s right time of year to be stuck on hot ..?

Hi greywolfhound,
How many times did you cycle the temperature control ?
As it can take a number of attempts for the valves/flaps to respond .

About 10 times up and down ..? when I’m up to it I’ll sort it I will take off glove box and have a look.. I’m in hospital twice next week Taunton and Bristol so bigger things to worry about ☹️..last place I want to be at the moment ..hey ho .

hi all, not sure if allowed but please re-direct to correct location. My Colour Storm FSI has no internal heater and keeps coming up with temperature flap fault. Removed glovebox to access motor and disconnected it from the flap but i can see it working, any ideas?
Would a stuck thermostat cause me to have no hot water coming through to heater matrix? Thank you for your help/ideas in advance.

If the thermostat was not opening at all, you'd have no heat. You should get a VCDS scan ASAP, as the FSI has an electronically controlled thermostat, and a scan will show what's going on. If the stat is not opening at all, the engine will overheat, and suffer serious damage. Better safe than sorry.
Mac.

Thanks PlasticMac, has anyone got the procedure for changing the thermostat?

Although this no longer relates to the original post for the tdi issue. I have added the answer for 999fire on here.

@999fire Here is the manual page....

Hi Mac,

Is your statement true? Although not exactly clear in our "definitive" FSI coolant schematic, the heat exchanger for the cabin always receives coolant at engine outlet temperature and is independent of the thermostats function???? Not sure yet about this.
FSI Cooling System.png

1 Coolant pump
2 Throttle valve
3 Heat exchanger for interior heater
4 Coolant expansion tank
5 Thermostat housing
6 Map-controlled engine cooling system thermostat
7 Coolant temperature sender G62
8 Radiator with outlet coolant temperature sender G83
9 Oil cooler
10 Cylinder head and cylinder block

I must look into further at some point.

Hi Andy, I'll peruse the diagram on a larger screen later. Hadn't considered that the heater matrix (on an FSI) might effectively be a bypass to the thermostat. If it is, flow through the heater matrix would be high when the stat was closed, but much reduced when the stat was open (fluid will take the path of least resistance).
Mac.
Edit: Thinking a bit more, the heater matrix is probably a lower head path than round the engine's cooling system. If so, flow through the heater matrix would not be affected much by the position of the stat.
