Hello from London!

So i've finally caught the culprit red handed so may say.. well finally got to film it lol.. my gear knob wobbling it self away.. please excuse the mess as i haven't had her cleaned up properly yet.

Also i found my passenger door makes a clicking noise every time you open & sometimes when closing, i've tried to examine what causes this but clueless, i've attached video below:

The clicking is coming from the extendable arm that connects the door to the body(hope this makes sense).

Any thoughts on the above are very much appreciated!
Thanks

It'ts the door check strap. Search the forum as there is plenty on the subject

This is probably the best thread

Yes, and don't put it off, it is a DIY job (if you have the correct spline screwdriver to get the door panel off, the rest is normal spanner work.

Left as it is can cause cracking of the hinge area or worse still it could allow the door to swing open wide in the wind without restraining it.

anyone has any views towards the wobble on the gear knob? also i may add i sometimes put it in first and it crunches right before it hits the 1st gear, ie it goes in super smooth & just as it hits into the 1st gear slot i get slight crunch? i had a local specialist look at it & they say its the gearbox that gone, i'm convinced its the gear linkage, someones mentioned to tighten the gear cables which i haven't had a go yet but i have a feeling i may need to change this first?
thanks again all

The crunching sounds like the synchromesh worn, if you push it into gear too quickly a worn synchromesh will cause the gears to crunch momentarily.

It is unusual for it to be on 1st gear, it is normally on 3rd gear on the A2.

So it MIGHT be that your gearbox is badly worn.

You really should do the gear linkage adjustment before you spend any money, it is free and MIGHT just help.

I guess I'll be hands on this weekend with the linkage adjustment & the passenger door, thanks!
If the linkage adjustment doesn't solve it I'm to assume I should start saving up for a new box?

If it is crunching when you engage gear then it is badly worn, I have put up with the 3rd gear crunch for over a year on a previous A2 and it didn't get any worse, but yours does sound a bit worrying.

Fingers crossed, the gear linkage MIGHT just be far enough out to cause a crunch if it is catching the next gear as well.

It only crunches on 1st gear & it is sometimes not all the times, i usually drop it to 2nd & then put 1st & it avoids the crunch every time i do this

.

That is because pushing it into 2nd before first, spins the gears up in the way that the synchromesh does (or should do!) so a useful thing to do to save cruching the gears away.

Id also suggest chainging gear oil as could just be low as in all the A2 gearboxes ive changed the oil on they have always been way under what should be in there and its always made the gearchanging and sound of the gearbox much quieter after changing the gear oil .. if the oil level is too low the first to suffer would be first gear sycromesh but it could also be wear on the input shaft as other have had problems with this before when one of the bonnet drains was not correctly positioned so water pours into the top of the gearchange shaft ..

Sorry for late reply not been on for a while. Mines standard so haven't sprayed those bits. Here's the only couple i have at the moment.

Oo thanks for the advice, I will have a look at the drainage above bonnet see if that's in any way directed towards the gearbox also will look at servicing the gearbox hopefully that will help, but before that will have to wait for a slightly better weather in London lol
