Good evening from the Netherlands. I am the brother of drwellsie and, as mentioned by him, have indeed bought my own A2. Here is a snap from a quick test run over to the UK last weekend. Mine is a 2004 1.4 and basic spec. right down to the black doorhandles and mirrors. All going well apart from a suicidal pigeon cracking the lefthand headlight in Belgium and the wipers needing some attention to the earthing...

More anon.

Hi guys, nice to meet you.

I'm not aware of a how many left type data source over here so I haven't got any proper data. My observation would be that (proportionally) there are a lot of A2s over here. You see them more often than in the UK. Most of them seem to be imported though, you can tell when the numberplate is more recent than the car itself so it's not really a question of how many are left, more like how many have been introduced! The A2 suits the Netherlands well because the (very high) road tax is based on weight, fuel is relatively expensive and parking space often limited. The smooth roads help you forget the slightly choppy ride of the A2 as well...

I rather like the idea of Road tax being determined by weight!
I think I need to think through the consequences, expect and not!

I guess our current system has a crude link to weight, via engine size etc. but a pure weight basis might push car manufacturers towards better lightweight design

It is also easy to import cars from Germany which means more 'unusual' German cars end up there. :)
