Hello from Sweden

First update, So I cleaned the grounds to the start motor and body but no difference. Still just clicks. Will order a new starter and maybe I can get it before the weekend. I noticed something else thoungh that the oil level was high on the stick, So we stuck a hose down the oil stick pipe. Same length as it should be at 3.3L level and guess what?

Some prevoius owner has over filled the car with 5 Liters to much oil. After removing 5 liters its now on the right level on the stick.

Welcome to the forum & absolute bargain find, a good used headlight will cost more than what you paid for the car:D

Thanks, Yes I looked at the scrap yard what they charge for nice doors. One door was 3x the price i paid for the entire car.

Did you try a second temporary earthing point? Just a jump lead from the engine to an unpainted bolt on the body ought to do it. It's the last free thing to do before buying another starter motor.

Yes, I used starter cables and moved them around to maybe 5-6 different points

If you have convinced yourself that the earth connection is good, it could be the solenoid itself that has failed rather the
starter motor. Removing the starter, really needs access from below with the undertray removed in order to get access to the lower of the two mounting bolts.

Yes, I saw a video on youtube on replacemant, but i will wait until i get the new one before i start

Hello and welcome,

I encountered something similar and it had something to do with the ignition barrel. If everything else is good (battery, earth cable), I guess attempting something similar to the video in this post is worth a go.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Worth taking the starter apart, and checking the solenoid. Fixable, and much cheaper than a new starter. Even if you fit the new one, take a look at the old one anyway, as a spare, or candidate for the market place.
Mac.

Sounds like the problem I had, the Steering Lock Ignition Barrel Switch: 4B0905849.

I´ll try swapping the starter first and if that doesn´t do it i´ll look at that

Hello A2Steve, Put in a better used battery in and checked all the electric stuff, Sunroof, electric windows, lights, horn, radio, fan, heated seats. Everything works but won´t turn over.
Even the sunroof works?! And the colour is great too! Hopefully it will be an easy fix, you got a really great A2 there for bargain price.

Yes Sylvester, Opened it back and forth 3-4 times. Figured it needed some excercise to stay in shape. :) All the electrical stuff I have checked so far has worked.

5 Litre? So lucky the engine didn't explode from the extra pressure. Or perhaps that caused the internal damage.

Yes, Someone really didn´t know what they were doing. I don´t see any leaks and it turns over so I am hoping there isn´t any damage but I won´t know until i get it started maybe next week when the new starter arrives. The oil was very clean so I hope they filled it after it stopped running.

Before you try to start the engine I would remove all the spark plugs and disconnect the coil(s). This way the engine will hopefully spin over and if there is anything extra in the cylinder it will have a chance of being blown out of the spark plug locations. If the engine is happy to turn over without and strange noises or fluids being ejected, then fit the plugs after checking them and connect the coil(s).

Once running I would swap all the filters and engine oil. That way you know how fresh things are. Make sure you get quality correct grade oil and OEM filters.

I removed the sparkplug furthest to the left and looked down the cylinder with a flash light to see if the engine would turn over and it did without any noises. I didn´t notice any oil on top of the piston but like you say i should remove them all. Trying to find my inspection camera. Haven´t used it in a while so not sure where i put it. But thanks for the suggestion. I will do that.

I swapped the starter but still no go, Engine turns over now with new starter but it doesn´t turn over easy. I bypassed ignition and starter relay by starting directly on the starter with booster cables. Not even easy when I have removed all the spark plugs. I am starting to think the engine might be shot. I have heard from a mecanic that these 1.4 can have crankshaft issues.
