Hello! Please Help me!Newbie :)

Hi everyone :)

Right pleaseeee help me and please dont take the mick out of me for not knowing how to sort my audi out! And yes i have read the manual ....

I bought my audi a2 1.4 petrol se a week ago and in this muggy weather i have been having a few problems with the climate control! I've read the manual, and went back to the dealer and even emailed everyone who is selling an audi a2 on ebay with this question but i keep getting different answers from everyone, and being a 'bird' everyone thinks im just being dizzy!
Basically all i want to know is how do i stick my car on using the blowers only and NO air con/climate control? I just want fresh air and air blowing on me and the air con really does affect my fuel. I drove 220 miles and my fuel was down to 3/4 of my tank. Even my old renault clio was better on fuel consumption. And because i was driving on the motor way i didnt want the sunroof open or the windows really.

If anyone could help i would be very very grateful

Hello Chantelle,

Right - take this as your definitive answer. There is no way to have the fans going without having the aircon (or climate control) on. I'm presuming you have the full-monty climate (all press-button controls as opposed to the circular dial type?).

You can put the system into economy mode by pressing the ECON button, but that's all. This button effectively turns off the refrigeration unit so that the air entering the vehicle can never be at a lower temperature than the outside air. However, this will almost certainly lead to misted windows, especially if the air outside is humid.

In short, the most ecomnomical way to drive the A2 if you have the Open Sky system, is to press the OFF button on the climate panel and open the roof to the first position. This will add drag to the car, but it will be less than having a couple of Engerland flags stuck to the windows!

Hope this clears things up for you,

Mike

No Air Con

Hi Chantelle,

Here is my tuppenny worth. I may have spent too long in the sun today so perhaps others might correct my comments.

I note that you have a 2001 year petrol model A2. I have an A2 diesel of the same vintage and if the fuel tanks are the same size, they aren't very big. You don't need a big fuel tank when you drive such an economical car. It would be interesting to compare how much it cost to fill the fuel tank of the Renault compared to your Audi. My guess is that the Renault swallowed more fuel and hence took longer to reach 3/4 mark.

I have heard that it is better, from a reliability point of view, to keep the air con on all the time. I have never turned mine off and after a days work in an office which doesn't have air con, I really look forward to being refreshed.

Keep a a record of how much MPG you get and ignore how quickly the needle moves.

Enjoy your new car and avoid the potholes!

John.

Hi Chantelle, welcome to the A2oc.
Second opinion - press the ECON button. This switches off the aircon but should still allow fresh air into the car.
I have the diesel and leave the aircon on all the time. It seems to make very little difference to the mpg.
I suspect the Clio fuel tank is bigger than the A2's so I hope your not relying on tank mileage as a guide to fuel consumption

Cheers Spike

I believe the compressor is the driven unit, whereas the condenser is similar to a radiator in appearance.

Hello Chantelle,

I like you swapped a renault Clio for an A2 (and am well happy that I did!! :)) and noticed a change in fuel consumption, but as has been said this is for two main reasons not related to the air-con. Firstly the tank on the clio is massive compared to the A2 its 50 litres if I remember rightly as opposed to 30 on the A2. So right off the bat you're gonna get less out of a tank before you've even turned the key.

Secondly the clio had phenominally good MPG averaging atleast 60 to the gallon, despite the manufacturer claims the A2 is quite up there if you lucky you should get about 50mpg.

Re switching you air-con off as has been said its makes very little difference to your MPG, I know because I had mine running in econ for a while in the winter. I put it back into 'normal' mode after the system began to develop a unpleasant smell - spike explained why this happens.

So my advice would be leave it turned on. However I guess it comes down to personal preferrence some people just don't like air-con, my girlfriend (who does have a clio) hates it and would rather sit in a baking hot car than turn it on!!

I want to say thanks to everyone who has helped me- you won't believe some of the answers i have got on what i thought was a simple question. Someone told me to turn the temperature to 19.5 and that should do the trick ad other ones just basically laughed at me!
I think you guys are right- about the size of the engine tank in a clio as oppose to an a2- and i was relying on the fuel guage and thinking about it you guys are right about that too! Ok well i will try it on econ and see how the fuel consumption is then hopefully it will do the trick :)

Thanks

In the recent hot weather I start the car with aircon, when its been standing in the heat and then, when cool, switch the aircon off and recycle the air (probably best for short journeys).

I was pee'd off when I first found out that you couldn't just shut the climate control down and have real fresh air coming in through the open vents. We would have spec'd Opensky had we known! We did at least spec rear electric windows and have found that with both the rear windows open slightly and one of the front windows open a couple of inches the booming noises are too bad.

ah, yes.. nice warm day, driving along in the A2, nice scenery, windows down, and a blasted Chinook in your earhole - bliss :p

Assuming you have the full electronic climate control:

1 - set the temperature you want (18-19 if hot outside)
2 - push "Auto" - this button should light up (in this position it will run the compressor and cool the air)
3 - push "Econ" - this turns off the compressor (No air cooling) but leaves everything else the same - controlled by the system. The light on the "Auto" button should go out.
4 - Adjust fan speed manually if you wish - but the system should run the fan faster the bigger the temperature difference between the setting and the temperature inside the car.

We have a petrol 1.4 - not the most economical of cars but it is quick for a 1.4!

Top Tip - Never turn the A/C off. Turning the compressor off and on will give wear problems - usually when the car is out of warranty. Then you end up with a £500 bill (happened on my A4)

I leave mine in auto all the time and have still got 74mpg on a run. A/C makes no difference in the tdi.

During long periods of cold in the winter the compressor isn't turned on even in AUTO mode. I then have to take the car to a warm garage to make it come on and lubricate the system.

From my experience, having the aircon running makes a negligible difference to fuel consumption. Therefore, in monetary terms you would need to be doing big miles to notice the effect on your wallet. But surely the advantages of enjoying driving with a cool head would outweigh this small gain (which is probably more than offset by the crap aerodynamics of an A2 driving with windows and roof open)? For those considering Opensky, I would point you to my posts elsewhere concerning the failure of mine (getting Audi to look at it next week for diagnosis...). It's great open some of the time, but personally I prefer having it shut with the climate on.

I agree that on a really hot day leaving the roof shut is a good idea. However if you remove the blinds the level of light and feeling of space within the car, even with the roof closed, makes having open sky more than worthwhile.
