hello - researching future a2 purchase

Welcome aboard.

I see that you are not a million miles from me and you'd be welcome to view an FSI (not for sale) should the mood dictate.

Whatever bias people have for engines, everyone is aligned in their affinity for the A2. It is a cracking little car, innovative, lightweight, fuel efficient (even by today's standards) and built to last (and some). Luxury and relative comfort wrapped in the perfect package. You'll not regret buying one - just choose wisely based on condition and service history. Most of the engines are durable per se, so a higher mileage well cared for example with a loaded and stamped service book would be a fine addition to your fleet.

I shan't repeat what others have said regarding engine choice, there is enough detail out there for you to make up your own mind based on your needs, driving preference and any future considerations you might have.

Good luck in your search for your chosen chariot whatever engine or specification you elect to buy.

..got 2 1.4 tdi 75bhp both remapped by myself to around 105 ish.

I get 60 to 70 mpg depending on commute and outside temp

Btw one tdi at 153,000 and the other at 288,600 miles neither as had any engine work other than timing belts and water pumps

Paul - just so i'm clear here, you've got 105 bhp and you can still get 60-70 mpg so not much (if any) loss of mileage? That sounds like the best of both worlds.

How much torque does the map give you? I'm guessing significantly more than a 1.6 fsi? in which case that would make it a much quicker car point to point..

very interesting. :)

Mine are similar to be honest, ~100bhp - loads of torque and my average is 61.2mpg (see below) - it's dropped a bit recently, but that's because I have a different route to work and it's stop start a lot of the time through town. My record is 74.2 which got nearly 600 miles from a tank.

Thanks - that's good to know.

BTW - you've had some great VAG cars in the past there. I've ran somewhere around 10 golf gti's of various flavours over the years and i'm on my third vRS but one of my favorites from way back was my '96 Corrado. I worked in the motor trade back then and ran this as a company car. It was one of the very last corrado's registered (ex VAG head office). Just the 2.0 8 valve engine but a lovely thing.. white, grey cloth interior.

Thank you - Yes, I've had quite a few from the VAG stable, but I've never actually owned a GTi of any form, or indeed any form of "16v" badged car. I managed to sneak membership into Club GTi by virtue of them letting in Scirocco Storms (GTi+). My Corrado Campaign was on of my favourites, and probably one of only a couple of cars I regret selling, but family circumstances required sale at the time :(

Yes you are reading it correctly. You get around plus 40 lb/ft of extra torque over the std map and around 25 extra bhp (the original map gives over the rated 75bhp, nearer 80 bhp)
Economy is actually improved if you don’t use the extra power as the extra torque will allow lower revs to be used
What is not to like
