could any one tell me what this gap is
 
That is a holder for either a lo-line cd-based navigation unit which was an option for DIS-enabled cars, or, a TV tuner for RNS-D specced cars.

It is NOT for a CD changer unit or anything else.

im not sure thats what i thought it looked like but wasnt sure if i took a few more pics do you think you might be able to tell what it is,

sorry i didn't read your post properly, would i need to get what went in this hole if i want to get a navigation unit ie rns-e
 
Nope - if you get RNS-E, you can fit a tv tuner in this hole. If you have a normal, single height headunit fitted, you could put a cd-based navigation unit in there, but only if you have the full driver info system (i.e. you have the little rocker switch on the wiper stalk end).
