Help needed - only 5,500 miles on new tyres!!!!

Hi,

I really need some advice and people's opinions. I have had my A2 just over a year now but bought it 2nd hand (X reg). 8 months ago I had my MOT and needed 2 new front tyres. 2 weeks ago I took my A2 to my local garage (not Audi) for a service and they told me I needed 2 new front tyres again! I had only done 5,500 miles on these tyres and only had them 8 months.

I don't drive stupidly (one of the causes they gave me!), the tracking was off ever so slightly but not enough to make a difference apparently and the tyres had worn down as they should. They have now put tyres on with a higher compund?? But they put the last ones on too, does this mean they put on the wrong tyres to suit my car?

Do I have a case to go back and speak to a manager about it? Overall with tyres, break pads, a few other small things, and the service itself, my bill was £475!!!!

I don't know much about tyres so any help anyone can give me would really help. I cannot afford for this to happen again in another 8 months!

Thanks

Hannah

Did they say anything about uneven tire wear?

Found this picture showing the wear depending on tire pressure.

This is what happends when you have wrong wheel alignment.

Hi,

The price of the actual service was fine, even at that price if it had had other problems I wouldn't of been too worried, it's that it was the front tyres again that made me hesitant to pay out so much money again! Thanks for the advise, haven't notices a thump, but if I do go back it will be something I will mention/query with the garage.

Thanks

Hi,

Thanks for the help & advice.

They said that overall the tyres had worn down correctly, the tread all over had worn down the way it should have. They did mention checking tyre pressure regularly, but at my last check the tyres were only slightly off the inflation they should have been. And from now on I will be checking them religiously and following any advice at all to prevent this happening again!

Thanks

Hannah

What milage do you get

Could some longer term owners give us new ones an idea of the milage they get from the front tyres. One of mine lasted 4500, I put that down to alignment (which was out). Thanks

Well, Tank's fast approaching the 40k miles mark and I've had experience of 3 different tyres so far:

The original equipment Michelin Pilot Sports were wearing quite wll, with about 3-4mm left when I changed all the wheels after they buckled! They'd done about 22k miles, and seen 2 winters and a summer.

The Goodyear Eagle F1s that came with the new wheels were (and the backs still are) excellent in terms of grip and handling, but they do wear quicker. I popped a front sidewall on a chunk of rock a few months ago and replaced it with an Avon ZZ3. I decided then to put this mismatched pair on the back axel and it looks like the Dunlops are just about out. They've done about 17k miles now and seen a summer, winter and spring.

The Avon seems to be a pretty decent tyre, albeit I've only done a thousand or so miles on it yet. I'll be replacing the other Eagle F1 with a ZZ3 soon, and may then switch axels again, so that'll mean Avons on the front and Eagles on the rear. Let you know how it's going in (hopefully) a couple of years time!

Cheers,

Mike

I got 47000 out of the orginals and have put 22000 on the Kumho's so far, I reckon they've got at least 15000 left in them which should just see me til winter if I use the motorbike lots too!!

I have just had a full set of Kumho's fitted in place of the P6000's which had done 28300mls .The wear was down to between 3&4mm ,really only changed them because of a blister on the sidewall, possibly a bit of careless kerbing!!!
