Help!...smell of burning oil when car's stationary?

Hi All,

This is my 1.4SE manual with sky roof, 17" wheels, all of which was on it when purchased. Had it a couple of months and really enjoy it.

Since owning her I've had a new n'/s rear window regulator fitted, 4 way window switch set, o/s rear window switch, mahoosive wiper blade (can't believe how big they are!).

Recently I can smell burning oil when the car has been run and is stationary, it isn't loosing or burning oil, can anyone diagnose what the problem may be or ballpark repair cost please?

Future plans - once worn low, change the 145/17 tyres for 50s for smoother ride, or, put 18 rotor alloys on her and be done with it! Full service once oil smell has gone!

All comments, thoughts are welcome.

Cheers.

Is this with the engine running or switched off? Does the smell come from the back or the front, is it worse inside or out?

Where is your oil level on the dipstick?

As for fitting 50 profile tyres on 17 inch wheels, you will get rubbing issues.

18 inch wheels will have to have 215/35/18 tyres to fit and will be less comfortable than 17s with 45 profile.

If you want comfort then either fit better quality shock absorbers or smaller wheels with a higher profile tyre.

Both! If I sit at the lights or junction with the window open I get a whiff of it and when I park the car I can smell it.

Thanks Steve. I was told that 50s on 17" wouldn't rub but I will take your word for it. I'll Probably put better shocks on. Thanks for info.

I don't know much about the petrol engine layout or if this theory is possible but a small oil leak onto the exhaust manifold often gives the described symptoms. Any signs of a rocker cover gasket leak

Cheers Spike

Thanks Spike, haven't taken bonnet off yet to be honest as been busy but will check.

Steve - haven't had chance to check oil but will get back on that one.

Tyres on car are 205/40/17!

Thank you all for input.

Oil pressure sensor leak peeing down the front of the petrol engine onto the exhaust which is on that side? Ours did it. 15 minute fix (dead easy) and about 7 quid for a Febi sensor - granted the engine itself has a couple of other places that seep oil very slightly, but that was the main source on front and underside.

Thanks Robin, booked it into local garage, checked oil level earlier (low) but shouldn't smell. Not dropping or burning oil but must be leaking from somewhere, although doesn't look "oily".

OPS that my bet was on is just above the EGR valve as depicted bottom left of picture around 7.30/8pm (if it was a clock face). This apparently goes quite often as the rubber membrane in the switch goes and then the oil can pee out through the plug and drip onto the engine block / exhaust area where it gets burnt off on hot metal
- if it isn't this then the jobs get progressively more difficult, sadly. Best of luck.
