Hi again!

Im trying to be a more active member on here so I'll make a reintroduction.
My names Neil, and I've owned my 2005 A2 TDi 90 for just under a year now...10 months.
I bought it as an economic commuter car without feeling much love for the cars at all (don't hate me!). I've always been a fast car guy, and unfortunately because of covid, I was running my much beloved Mazda 3 MPS into the ground, and it was costing me a fortune! Sadly, the Mazda has been SORN since Halloween, and because of rising fuel and vehicle tax costs it's a 2.3 petrol turbo - I'm unsure when I'll drive it again. The plan was this summer until the arse fell out of petrol prices. Not great for a 30mpg sports car.

So I have somewhat resigned myself to driving the little A2 for the foreseeable. I'm getting to like it more, but I really miss the power. When I bought it, it needed some work and TLC, and it could still do with a few things, some which will be quite expensive...and the lack of history and paperwork, and previous MOTs show it has been neglected by previous owners. However! It has 191,000 miles and it still goes great, and hardly ever complains. The clutch will slip if you boot it, but for controlled driving there are no probs!

Anyway, quite a lengthy intro and I dont want to go on too much. I'll list what I have repaired and replace so far, and then what I plan to do and leave it there! Thanks for reading 👍

Jobs sorted so far;
New Thermostat
New handbrake cable
New discs/pads/calipers on rear
New brake lines front
New coil spring f/o/s
New dipstick 😄
New aero wiper setup (previously not aero)
New number plates as last ones were perished, albeit the original dealer plates.

Things to do;
New wheels (I have SE 16s that are a mess - I'd like some better looking rims like TT comps perhaps)
New tyres (all tyres a budget brands such as Mohawk! And grip is poor. New tyres will no doubt come into the new wheels bit.
Clutch is slipping so I'm sure that'll need doing eventually along with a DMF. Have already ad quotes IRO £1k 😪 My service book does say that the car has " a good SMF" so I'm not sure if this is what is causing the clutch to slip under hard acceleration or not.
A full service
Front discs and pads
Switch out the slatted service flap for a smooth style one.
Yellow tints on fogs - I just like that personally.
Possibly lower the ride height as the wheel gap is huge and I hope it'll improve the handling.
Maybe a leather interior just for comfort. My commute drive is 70 miles round trip and I find the seats very uncomfortable and almost at a strange angle.
Other little bits like changing the windscreen washer jets and that, but plenty to go on and lots to spend. Looks like prices of these cars are rising so I'm sure itll all be a good investment and the poor thing needs someone who will finally give it the live and care it really deserves as it's so rewarding in return.

Forgot to post a pic or two!

Welcome....you will find us a good bunch on here.
Just my thoughts on what you have said.

Plan to have a new clutch....sooner rather than later as it is only getting worse...
Don't rush to lower it....

Lastly....have fun and enjoy...

Welcome, I was much the same as you. Bought my A2 just to put the miles on commuting.
I also have a 90hp though I had it remapped by a member on here which was the best money I've spent on it. Doesn't make it much quicker but pulls earlier making it feel like a more modern car.
Like you I put the 17" sport wheels on but changed them after a few months to a set of BBS RC324 then bought a set of 15" Pepperpot wheels which I've ran throughout the winter.
One thing it certainly hasn't been was a cheap run around, more an addictive hobby.
Hopefully you get it the way you like it.

Welcome- you have a very smart looking A2 there. On the seats: there’s height, recline and fore-and-aft and to be honest I didn’t even work out how to use the height adjuster for a few years, which ended up making all the difference for me. Enjoy!

@Taake

"My commute drive is 70 miles round trip and I find the seats very uncomfortable and almost at a strange angle."

I will be surprised if you cannot find an adjustment forward/back/up/down/tilt that does not suit, and the steering wheel goes up/down.

I suspect you have SE seats and if still no joy there are Sports seats that by repute are more comfortable with lumbar adjustment too (only rarely do SE seats have lumbar.)

Welcome.

Andy

Welcome to the exclusive TDI90 owners club. 🤣
A remap will do it the world of good 90 to around 115 which is a big improvement in a little light car like the A2 is. Maybe a K & N air filter will help it breathe better if that’s something that interests you.
Cruise control for your 70 mile commute. Only one guy to ask for that @timmus he will be in your neck of the woods sometime soon.
Enjoy the higher mpg around 55 even if you drive it like you have stolen it. 👍🏻

It was Timmus who did my remap while he was fitting the cruise control. I went to his house on my first week of ownership since I was commuting from Glasgow to Suffolk each week.
You'll read lots of posts about his quality of work, it's exceptional thrown in with excellent chat.
If you don't have cruise control I'd just bite the bullet and get your trip to Timmus arranged. You'll not regret it.
I think the armrest upgrade has made the biggest difference to comfort on long trips.

Thanks all

I missed Timmus in my area last year as I had to do the rear brakes which cost quite a lot. I'm hoping he'll be down to stay in Buzzard again soon as cruise would be so nice to have. I'm also interested in the remap.
The issue with my drivers seat is that it feels like it's slightly at an angle pointed towards the passenger side...just slightly which is quite odd.
But all in all it's a good runner despite nearly being on 200k 😄

The issue with my drivers seat is that it feels like it's slightly at an angle pointed towards the passenger side

If anything I think the steering wheel is slightly offset towards the middle of the car If you look through the driver's headrest from the rear seat, the wheel is certainly further offset than the pedals are, because the centre of the wheel lines up with the gap between the brake and clutch, rather than with the brake pedal itself. So your upper legs tend to have to point more towards the middle of the car for your left leg to get under the wheel onto to the clutch pedal - more so the closer you have to sit to the wheel.

You have found the wheel reach adjustment as well as the rake, haven't you? All the way up and all the way out is where I have to have it, and I'm only just 6 feet tall in shoes. Then the 'point' of the left bum-cheek right in the left hand seam between the bolster and the middle panels of the seat base, and sit right back against the seat back (I also find I need lumbar seats, on full, for any more than a couple of hours behind the wheel).

With regards to the seating position discussion…I am 6ft1 and just assumed that I needed the seat at its lowest point…but having moved it to the midway point in the height adjustment I now feel much more comfortable!!

The seat height adjustment in the A2 is unusual compared to other cars on which I've had it, in that it moves the base up and down relative to the backrest, instead of the entire seat relative to the floor. I don't know if that's an Audi/VAG thing but the A2 is the first car where I've encountered it. It means I can get the lumbar support in the backrest in exactly the position on my back where I need it. While that's a great help on my daily driver with lumbar SE seats, it makes the Sport seats in my Storm the most comfortable of anything I've ever driven  .
