Hi all

I have just signed on to the forum as I am looking at replacing my faithful Peugeot 106 diesel which has covered 80K miles in the last 3 years. I also have a MKiv Toyota Supra TT sitting in the garage waiting for summer to come back round again.

I am looking at the A2 at the moment and am hoping to spend £10.5K max. I'm not really bothered about the sunroof, but would like climate control and a top sound system.
So just a couple of questions:

What are the differences between the Symphony / Concert / Bose Systems?

Our local Audi dealer told me that servicing intervals would be around 30000 miles.(I drive 45 miles each way to work each day). Does this sound reasonable? I went to see a car at a non audi dealer at the weekend, and he told me that servicing intervals were 15000 miles, but the first service that this car had after it's PDI was at 26K miles. How do you check that the car has been serviced at the correct time?

What year/ model/ spec/ will my £10.5K buy me?

As there is an updated model being brought out, should I wait a few months before buying?

Thanks for any advice

Gordon

The Bose is great in the A2, I'm very very impressed with it. But the Audi 6-disc changer doesn't read CD-RW (CDR ok). Bose system is only the speakers and a separate amp + sub under the boot. You'll need a head unit, either Symphony or Concert.

Climate is a gem, works really well. Servicing is more realistic at around 15000-25000 according to my car and other people's opinions here. Its variable depending on your driving style though.

With the options you want, 10.5k will probably get you a late 2001, early 2002 low miler.

Hi Gordon - welcome to the forum!

Mine is the 1.4 TDi SE. For the past 2 years I have had a 50 mile round trip to work on a mixture of local and A-roads. I had my car serviced at ~26,000 miles. Since then I have done 3,000 miles and it now shows 25,500 miles on the service due indicator. I have heard of people getting more out of the intervals and similarly less, but it really does vary on your individual driving etc.

With regards to stereos, have a look at: http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/stereo.htm
Bose speakers are probably the finest speakers in the world and I hear that the quality of them is cars is second to none. Personally I think it is an expensive option and if you are lucky enough to find an A2 that already has rear speakers, I'm sure it will sound fine.

Yes there is a more powerful version of 1.4 TDi coming out soon (see http://www.whatcar.com/News_Article.asp?NA_ID=204332) but bare in mind that there will be few ex-demo/second hand versions of these for a short while so the deals on the older models will probably be better. It's really up to you if you want or need the extra power. I find that the current 1.4 TDi has plenty of power, so it may be worth trying to do a test drive on both before committing.

I think you'd easily find a decently specc'd A2 for less that £10.5k. Have a good look at http://uk.cars.yahoo.com
For £10,499, I found you: 01(51) AUDI A2 1.4 SE TDi, Met Black, 5674 miles, Diesel, ABS Brakes With Traction Control, Air-conditioning, Central Locking, Electric Mirrors, Electric Windows (front), Rear Spoiler, Cloth Trim, Power-steering, Radio-cassette, Rear Head-rests, Manual Transmission.

or for £10,495: 2001 51 Reg Audi A2 1.4TD SE, Diesel, Blue, Hatchback, 31,000 miles , 5 Doors. ABS, Adjustable Seat Height, Adjustable Seat Lumbar Support, Adjustable Steering Column, Alarm, Alloy Wheels, Body Coloured Bumpers, cd player, Climate Control, Computer, Driver Air Bag, Electric Mirrors, fsh, full length factory sunroof, Manual Transmission, Passenger Air Bag.

I've assumed you want a diesel but there are plenty more and good value petrol versions as well!!

Regards,

Stuart.

Hi Gordon,

Welcome to the forum. I cover only 20 miles a day on average. Having covered just over 10k since my last service the indicator still shows 16.4k to next service. I think you should expect to get at least 25k between services based on your mileage.

I have Climate Control on mine, but not that impressed. Especially on screen defrost, just does not seem to give any real umph when needed. Does anyone know when on recirc if the flaps open every few minutes to let fresh air in OR will i eventually sufficate.

The flaps will not open every few minutes, so in theory you could sufficate. However, the car is not sealed completely, so the chances of this are very low.

Regarding the performance, the A2 aircon is a very trick unit - for its size it is very effective.

Ahhh BMW system will open every 5 mins to replace the old air, this stops you falling asleep or drozing.

Sorry it's the German thing, i just wondered how switched on Audi were. But feel with so much glass area the system could of been a bit more efficient.

Thanks for your help guys. I think the present model (diesel) will be perfect for me, so it's just a case of finding the right car! Maybe when the 'new' car comes on stream, 'older' models will be easier to find. I'll be scanning the autotrader and audi websites in the meantime.

I know the garage that was selling this car and went round there about a month ago to have a look at it. The guy there told me it had been sold the week before, but was a lovely car etc etc. I noticed last week that the car was still on the Autotrader website so rang up again. 'Yes the car is still here.''But when I came round a couple of weeks ago I was told it had been sold.''Well the bloke was refused finance. We took the car off the forecourt when he agreed to buy it, and when it all fell through, we put it back up for sale.'

I went round to see it - nice little car, ex lease company, but it now has 34000 on the clock...........beware!

It depends on which BMW you are refering to. Not all BM's have auto recirc at all. The main difference with BMW is that they always opt for a ridicously amount of settings/toys to impress/confuse the driver, with no real benefit.
Personally, I prefer to be in control of the recirc mode as I get to decide when I stop fresh air coming into the cabin, rather than have it open just when I get stuck behind an artic. Maybe BMW could learn a few things from AUDI. ;)

Welcome!. Just wanted to say that as the others have done a darn fine job of giving advice!.

The A2 isn't going to stop prodcution until around 2005 so I doubt after this very recent update (new grill, diesel engine) there will be anymore. The other update was in 2003 when the floppy wiper and larger fuel tank was introduced as standard.

I believe you can ask your udi dealer to set up "timed" services i.e. not variable, but at 10,000 miles (or whatever) so check if you can. If it's a company car then there should be a service log, or check the service book. Don't know if Audi UK keep central records of services-or if you can find the dealer who supplied the car maybe they know if it has a full service history.

Happy A2 hunting.

Hi, I bought mine for £10.5k 1.4tdi SE 52 plate (16 months old) 7500 miles, 1 previous owner, taxed, from an Audi dealership, they serviced it, Sypmphony sound, climate control. Was on the forecourt for £11.5k, told the Salesman that it was more than my budget, he asked me what my budget was..£10.5k, after much hagling and several 'mysterious' trips and phone calls to his managers office we agreed on £10.5k :)

Very pleased

Something like that would do nicely. Looks like you've got yourself a nice deal there

I think it is possible if you go to your local dealership to trawl through their data base of A2's available. Or else use the online autotrader, thats how I found mine!! and dont forget forecourt price isnt buying price, I got a grand of, on that day a tougher customer might have got £1500 who knows?
