Hi, Bitten By The Bug

Hi everyone, im a proper car guy, been kicking around Car Forums for years.Always been a fan of the A2 and i have a big thing for 3 cylinder engines.Always fancied a 1.4TDI with red leather as a runaround but life took some turns, found myself on my own after divorce and ended up with a BMW 335i coupe, with red leather ( tough life) :) As my daughter got closer to her 17th Birthday ,i suddenly had one of those Brainwave moments and realised that an A2 could be a great car to teach her to drive in ( ex ADI) Kept eye on Autotrader, read stuff on here and decided on a 1.4 petrol...Then a 1.6 Sport came up locally,Black with red leather.Quick check on insurance and weirdly no difference in cost and an amazing £470 fully comp on a learner policy..Anyways, had a look, drove it, bought it....Cant stop driving it!!! So we bought it in November and Daughter drives it like she has driven it all her life, fantastic learner car. It's got a few jobs need doing ,but thats why i bought it. Usual amber engine light, bit of a leak Sunroof drain channel/ screen, wheels are buckled but are ok till she passes her test. Somebody has fitted a HID kit on it so thats coming off ,but we will update all the bulbs to make it better than standard.Because my 335i is so quick, i just put down the obvious performance deficit to that. However, the Alternator belt shredded, the Tensioner pulley was seized solid , got it replaced and i cant get over how peppy it is now,The seizing pulley obviously dragging on the crank. The engine now runs round to the red line so easily and quickly with a lovely roar, it really is like a mini GTI and actually apparently it's about the same as a mk4 GTI Golf. The engine really is very sweet with no rough running or any other issues and has lots of low end pull, which is really useful when a learner pulls away in the wrong gear!!!
So, the plan is to get Daughter through her test and let her run it for a while but at some point i will have it back and bring it right up to a good standard. It has a lovely interior with no wear on seats ,with a bit of food and a little bit of leather paint on one small bit, seats will be like new.Red gear knob has seen better days tho , and we have the standard wear on the radio, aircon and window switch buttons.Oh and two days ago the wipers stopped...Yep , standard issue earth problem on motor,so will be running a wire from motor body to earth tomorrow. It is a truly wonderful little car and it genuinely keeps my 335i parked in garage for a good few days every week and that is a massive recommendation because up till now, i couldn't bare the thought of ever giving my BMW up!!!

Hi Lokinen, many people do not realise how good the A2 is until they get out in it for the first time. We only bought "Albus" before Christmas but already have fun and Dawn likes it due to the higher position. Before you know it you will have another one or two, or three on your drive :) :)

Welcome along :) Sounds a nice little motor you've got there.

If you're wanting a "quick fix" for the worn gearknob then I ended up buying an A1 "Begonia Legends" gearknob and modifying it.

Welcome. I have wanted one for ages. Bought an fsi but had engine light with big troubles so swapped it for a 1.4. My dad liked it so much he went out and bought one and adores it. Took it to a VAG nut to help with a few fixes on mine he liked it so much he went out and bought one for his mrs and loves it!!

Great car. Great forum! Addictive to fix up cars!!!

Same situation for me. I have a two year old 535d, proper quick but still like driving my sons A2. He (my son) was 17 on Saturday and I’m struggling with insurance, where did you get it for that price? All his mates have fiestas and he calls them plastic cars!
Great little cars but be careful not to get into the modding game, oops, i’ve Already done that and got the bug.
