Hello to all,
What a fantastic site! I found this when doing some reasearch on A2's when one appeared at my local garage.

I'm picking up the car tomorrow - very excited. Its a 2004 1.6fsi SE crystal blue, open sky, 60000 miles...cant wait! Its actually for my wife but I think I might borrow it ocassionally!
:D

Hi and welcome to the club.

I am not sure how much your wife will get to use the car when you get the bug lol.

Hopefully see you at a meet.

David

Hi David,

Welcome! and thanks for the kind comments on this site. It's very friendly and has some great experts on all things A2.

Great colour - same as mine :) - it doesn't seem to show the dirt which means less need to wash it!

I hope the open sky is 100% OK - do read up the threads on open sky so you know how to keep it in A1 condition and avoid any nasty bills.

Yes I've read a little about open sky and what potential problems they have, rest assured its the first thing I'll be checking come saturday morning and first thing on my shopping list is a new grease gun!

Welcome to the club and ownership;), you'll find this site very, VERY active compared to other forums (if you go on other forums that is) i've started posting on another site and you can go a week and nobodys posted, where as this site you just not go on for the weekend and you could have over 200 new post's that you've missed

Happy motoring and i hope you enjoy reading as there's lots to read ;)

Cheers Phil

Hiya and welcome!

Forget the grease gun and take out the fabric blind first of all - it cuts out so much light from the interior and makes maintenance of the roof a pain. After that, clean all the rubbers with some WD40 on a bit of old kitchen roll to get rid of the old lubricant, which will have become a grinding paste.

Then, re-lube with underground pipe collar lubricant, which comes in a little bottle from B&Q - simples!!

Cheers,

Mike

Word of caution about permanently removing the fabric blind. With all that glass when the sun shines it can get very hot in that cabin and the blind helps to keep things cool. However as Mike points out it makes lubing the OS a pain. However i found a compromise. You can unclip the blind to carry out the OS maintenance and then replace the blind without reusing the clips, thus making instalation and removal of the blind a 30 second job.

Thanks for the handy tips on OSS fellas. I picked the car up last night, there are a couple of blemishes I didnt originally notice but overall very happy with the car.
Cheers

I owned mine since 3 years ago with open sky and no problems in all this time.

I found this topic because my open-sky rear blind is loose. Actually, it's kind of hanging as the rubber ring that keeps it in place is out of its place. BUT I can't operate on it as the glass is too close to the blind frame and my hands don't fit into that narrow space.

I wonder how could work this out without dismantling the whole OS system ... even thought about removing the blind for good and sticking a perforated vinyl film on the inner side of the glass, as in sunny Spain it can get really warm without any screen, and the original blind is not removable but meant to be there all the time.

Please, help :)

The front retractable blind can be removed through the top of the car with ease, the rear however, is attached to the roof lining so probably shouldn't be removed. Anyway, the way to fix a loose one is to get a clamp or grips on the roof lining and under the fabric on the blind from underneath, then squeeze, there are about 20 clips all the way around that hold it in but it's easy enough to clamp them back in place. Hope this helps.

Here’s a picture I found showing the method of securing the frame. We use a standard pair of grips.

Thanks Kleynie! What's that silvered flat piece on top? is it a part of standard grips?

Here a couple pics of my roof blind issue:

Ah, I think we misunderstood. You have a problem there, the whole frame needs to come out which means you have to drop the head lining.
I have a spare frame if required. Where are you based?

you can take it out without removing the head lining - i have a reindeer skin which goes there for winter.

But it's not an easy fix. I have a couple of places like this on mine. A replacement blind is around €50, IIRC.
