Hi.

I'm John. I just turned 19. Some of you will know my dad, @Bargepower
I had to bring his A2 back after he hurt his knee. It was the first time I had driven an A2 and it was longest drive I ever did at over 250 miles.
I have a VW UP! 1.0 Move Up! but I prefer the A2 so I have joined the forum to learn more about them before I buy one. Dad won't give me his, I asked.
I live in Penrhyndeudraeth in Wales where there are no restrictions or emission zones so I will probably look at a diesel.

Bye!

It's just been put up for sale in the 'cars' section.
I'm up in Colwyn Bay, so not too far from Llandudno.
Let me know if it fits the bill, this really is a belter pal ??

Hi Andy,
I’ve just had a look at your ad. as @Baby Bargepower hasn’t got marketplace access yet. If it had OSS or even BSS I think he’d have bitten your hand off. OSS is a major selling point for him.

Welcome aboard, another family of A2's is soon to be by the sounds of it, great choice of car and it has so much potential to make it your own unique ride. Good luck with the search and hope to see pics of one soon.

@Bargepower , That was a nice ploy getting your son, @Baby Bargepower to drive your beloved car home. Hope the knee is better now ;). Remember you have unleashed the monster now he has got the taste for A2s. You are most welcome here and probably know more than most on here!!

It wasn’t a ploy, the car was stuck up in Wales as I had to come home by train. I didn’t expect him to prefer a 20 year old A2 to an 18 month old VW UP!, which he now intends to sell.

Welcome aboard John :) It's really good to see young members joining up with enthusiasm for the A2. If a drive in a 20-year old one with no climate can tempt you out of a modern box (and not even a bad one, by most accounts) with up-to-date technology, it just goes to show how good a car they still are!

Nice to see some younger members coming on board!
Just wish my youngest would, I’ve given him two A2’s already that I’d didn’t want

@Baby Bargepower is going to look at a fully loaded Dolphin Grey Tdi on Saturday. It’s in a small local garage and not advertised on the internet, he found it in the local free paper!
I went to look at this car today.
On the surface it looks immaculate but underneath is another story as there is hardly any metal left in the front pressed wishbones, it has a broken spring at the rear. All the suspension looks like it needs replacing.
There is no undertray and there is a big oil leak too.
I'm not going to buy this one.

I suppose there are two schools of thought here.

One is you buy a good example that may need a few replacements or upgrades but not imminently and can be driven now.
Two the car that is sub ideal but the price makes it attractive and the jobs are all within reason are able to be completed over a sensible period of time and cost.

Either looking at it as a long term project or a fixer upper initially breaking the jobs down into urgent, soon and nice to have. I still maintain that it takes about 2 years to get a car to the standard you want it, unless you can find exactly what you want off the bat.

We have all seen on here complete basket cases turned into really nice examples. Like everything in life it comes at a price. What I am saying is that provided that you know what you are looking at and roughly know what to expect cost wise that buying a £3000 example could end up costing more than a £500 example. Who is to say the more expensive car is better, or maintained, or repaired to a better standard that what the cheaper car will ultimately cost and done you to your taste / standards.

Hi John.
Met your dad last week,
Welcome to the forum
I agree with @audifan buy a cheap one & do it up to your own taste.
Good Luck finding your new car

I agree with above comments, i paid £700 for my A2 and ive been enjoying making it my own ever since, ive said it before and ill say it again "half the joy of owning an A2 is what needs doing and what you want to do with it". Take a look at the project threads and you'll see lots of different ideas and each member making it to their own taste.
I hope you find what your looking for and I look forward to seeing your own project take place.
