Hi, has anyone experienced a cracked windscreen,

My longest lasting screen was a Pilkington, fit well and it gripped the scuttle well too. Lost it to what I think was a pellet gun shot. My insurers will not fit Pilkington, must be a bit too pricey for them?
Thanks for the reassurance Phil 🙏 the funny thing is in all the years Sally and I have had a2,s ..and as you know we have had a few..never had a windscreen go .. we didn’t bother going through insurance as there was £185 excess…never worth it .

If my excess was that much, I would've looked at alternatives. From my recent chat with National Windscreens,
I reckon I'd have chosen differently from Autoglass's standard replacement.

I deal with these issues a bit different.
Every month, after receiving the salary, I automatically (the bank system does it actually) split some funds in different amounts for this and that and that...
And if just the danger for the windscreen to crack costs you that much, you can manually divert some funds for that certain matter. You may not feel more or less ÂŁ20 a month loss for that certain saving, but if the problem arrives a couple of years later and you have ÂŁ480 on hand by that time, imagine how much less you will have to spend out of pocket.

Interesting replies, I had the screen replaced via insurance ÂŁ100 excess with Autoscreens I asked the friendly fitter if he has fitted an A2 screen before, he said I have 37 years experience and fitted A2 screens before I did remind him they can be tricky, he also said the wind deflectors are in the new screen, he said have a cup of tea and return in an hour .Took 1hr to fit. Went to collect the car and noticed the driver side was below the screen frame so forming the deflector. The fitter was busy fitting another vehicle so I took the car home, it was then I noticed the passenger side of the screen was actually above the screen frame and the seal along the top there was a gap that would allow water in. as it was too late to contact Auto screens and had a trip early next day, I have not had the chance to contact the company until tomorrow, where I was visiting I was asked if I had fitted the screen myself I replied If I had fitted It I would have made a better job of it. It is a Pilkintons screen and there are no wind deflectors fitted. I am returning the car tomorrow to see what the excuses are. Watch this space!!!

Could you post a picture of the wind deflector and screen frame please?
I ask because all of my screens have fit into a recess. The gap between the glass and space frame has a rubber filler strip in it. No frame and no deflector.

A bit off topic, but I recently had the rear screen on the TT replaced. I also thought the space between the glass edges and the body was a rubber filler of some kind. Turns out that the glass comes with a rubber "gasket" bonded to it, and it's the inner side of the "gasket" that is bonded to the car, and what you see from outside is the "gasket" The fitter said this is quite common. The screen was genuine Audi, last one in England, maybe UK, and located for me by @CreweAudi .

That is all standard, a screen in a recces with a filler rubber bonded to the screen. The filler is not a seal, the seal is the bonding mastic between the screen and space frame.
The truth is they don't fit particularly well, attached are pictures of my car. Not perfect but better than two recent replacements so I'm living with it.

My TT Rear Screen looked like that, the rubber "gasket" was not correctly shaped on it's outer edge, so didn't fit the recess properly. It was a pattern screen. I complained, and they said they'd fit a genuine screen but, they couldn't find one. With the help of Tom @CreweAudi one was located in Huddersfield, which National Windscreens collected, and shipped to my local depot. It is a much better fit.

Hi all, complained to Autoscreens about the poor fit windscreen. They came back within the hour to say they would refit the windscreen the following day ,they did but still no wind deflectors the new fitter stated A2 s do not have wind deflectors I told him that mine did until a new screen was fitted las week but he insisted no deflectors. The screen was a much better fit ( Pilkintons) so was happy with that but no wind deflectors. Since then I have examined a few A2s and none have wind deflector on their screen. As mine is an 05 reg. I wondered if these deflectors were only fitted to the last produced.

Tried to get a replacement original Audi windscreen, Audi have made them obsolete 10/22 so they are no longer available in the UK. Still available from Audi Tradition.
