Hi,
I have had my A2 1.6 FSI 2004 for a few months now. It only has 42000 miles. I have really enjoyed driving it so far. Unfortunately the EML light has come on and when I took it to a local garage they cited a fault code 17439 and mentioned that the Inlet manifold flap linkage broken. The car still drives fine as far as I can tell. 2 questions:
1. Is the car still ok to drive or should I not use it until further investigation?
2. How could the garage know about the linkage without dismantling the engine?
Ok a a third question does anyone know a trustworthy /knowledgeable garage near Southampton who could help and not cost me the earth??
Thanks in advance.

Firstly, welcome, you've found a great community (though I'm not the best person to answer your questions).
1. It's safe to drive, FSI is well known for this issue.
2.The linkage is visible without stripping though it is possible they have related the 17439 code to this without significant investigation which would suggest they're above average(IMO-could be wrong). :)
3.No idea though someone will be along shortly to assist.
4. Good luck and don't forget to post pics, we all love A2s.

Hi,

Welcome.

You are not alone, I have two FSI's and both have experienced the the notorious inlet flap manifold. In fact I would say it is inevitabl for any FSI, but later in terms of mileage, say 80k onwards but yours at 42k is surprising but it may be partly age related.

To answer some of your questions.

1. Yes, your FSI is safe to drive without risk of further damage, just that the performance will be somewhat restrained and a few less mpg I think. I drove one of mine for three years with the problem just got fed up with the EML on in the end. Unfortunately this is not now possible with the new MOT rule of 'EML Illuminated = Fail' for your A2, so it will have to be fixed before your next MOT.
2. The garage may have been going with the reputation of the fault code. The part that normally breaks is an arm that rotates to open the inlet flaps, my mechanic thrust in hand and could feel the broken arm but you can see it with a bendy probe camera.
3. Sorry cannot help with a Southampton area garage recommendation, I am sure someone will.

There is hours of reading here on the forum about the flap issue. Regret to inform to have professionally repaired is not cheap as it involves a fair number of labour hours especially if you elect for a 'full fix'. Some reading should explain this statement if you have interest in the mechanical side.

A young FSI well worth doing.

Not quite Southampton but these folk are flagged up elsewhere on this Forum in Portsmouth. I've never tried them:

I use Auto Work (Audi specialists but not particularly A2) in Salisbury for my FSi. They are savvy, decent people who charge sensibly and will give you a loan car. Not far from Southampton. Jason is an outstanding mechanic and he has a good team:

I would echo the recommendation for Autowork. I use them to service my A2 1.4 and Jason and his team do a brilliant job.

Hi and welcome to the forum, and congrats on your low mileage fsi, we love ours.

Don't listen too much to the doom merchants on here concerning the fsi, it's not that difficult an engine to work on if you can find an honest mechanic who knows them inside out and charges a lower hourly rate.We did just this and ours is fixed and runs superbly is excellent on fuel, over 50mps quite easily and is a quick car.

The fault is wear in the end bushes that support the rod that runs the length of the manifold. The rod holds flaps which vary the air going through the manifold. Due to wear in the end bushes, there is side to side slap of the rod and therefore the flaps end up hitting the side of each manifold port and sticking. This gives a feed back position error via the potentiometer on the end of the manifold and therefore generates error P17439.

17439 - intake manifold tuning valve (N316) set point t not reached P1031,.........is not necessarily a broken linkage as many say, most arn't. We had the same problem with ours, linkage was not broken but it wouldn't reach it's set point but drove well enough. We decide on a new lower manifold, guaranteed to fix it and cheaper in the long run as your only paying once to get in there. Once fixed it drove very eagerly indeed on low revs and right through the rev range so well worth pursuing to get it fixed as they are a joy to drive.

It's a 4 hour job for a good mechanic to take out and replace.
