been doing my homework and it looks like there isnt alot that goes wrong with them ,but any pointers would be good(ive been thru all the stickys on buying ,they were a great help)
looking to get a 1.4 petrol model as it ll be doing quite a lot of miles and would like to get decent mpg on par with the lupo and dont really fancy diesel

is there a big difference between 1.6 and 1.4 engines??? any changes over the years???
anyway hopefully ill be more of a fixture on here in the next month or so and i will probably start messing with it as i dont tend to keep cars standard for very long lol
cheers in advance for any help

Hi Dan, welcome to the A2oc

Good to see you have been doing your homework on buying an A2.
As fuel consumption seems quite important to you I would highly recommend you at least try a diesel. Like you, I was set on a petrol model but tested the diesel and immediately preferred the way it drove. I quickly got used to the diesel clatter at low speeds, love the mid range torque, the fuel economy and the £35 / year road tax (only for cars registered from March 2001 I think)

Cheers Spike

I would second Spike don't wright off the diesel untill you try, as it would give you probably the best mpg's plus £35 road tax is a big saving.
I think 1 of the biggest things is the 1.6 does tend to have coil pack problems, but do give them all a try before you buy

Cheers Phil

PS welcome to the OC

You'll be unimpressed by the 1.4 petrol I think and as Phil has hinted, the 1.6 can suffer problems (coil packs, catalysts and lambda sensors primarily).

The diesels are the pick of the crop when it comes to A2s and I actually look forwards to paying my road tax each year (it's cheaper than my bike!!!!).

Cheers,

Mike

Oh, and my A2 is more economical than the bike too!

Hi

I would try both the 1.4 petrol and diesel to see which suits

Yes, the diesel is more economical but on a recent 700 mile trip I managed 48.2 from my 1.4 petrol.
In day in day out driving short journeys I get 42-43, but I personally like the petrol, it's smooth, and has a nice growl when you accelerate, but it's never harsh.

The petrol seems not be as favourable as the diesel in these forums but it's whether you prefer petrol or diesel at the end of the day.

hi
thanks for the replies,t.b.h im not too worried about it feeling a little underpowered as the lupo is only a 1litre lol
im not a huge diesel fan but will try and test drive one(although they seem few and far between)just to get a comparison
seems that the few issues there are are comon across the vag range, coil packs, maf sensrs and lambda s are all things ive come across before and relatively easily diagnosed and sorted(luckily i have a friend whos a vag tech and looks after all my cars)
got two to see this week so will keep you informed

cheers and thanks for the welcome

I see you have a taste for "special" cars. If that's the case, a 1.4TDI A2 will complete your collection! The petrol powered are fine if you want simple and common, but if you're into a little engine modding, a diesel is perfect. And even if you leave it as it is, with the A2's low weight and high torque, you'll have a nippy car that gives you a good mpg and is easy to drive round town.

Hi Dan,

Just noticed you on this forum, and nice to see another NB'er taking up the A2. Welcome on board. You may remember me as a long standing memeber of the NB forum as well as various Porschey things. I sold my NB after 9 years of ownership, which makes it the longest I've ever kept a car, and probably the most reliable car I ever owned too. So much for all that guff about the 2.0 petrol engine. Mine was a peach for all the time I owned it.

I bought the A2 (1.4TDi) as business changed and I found myself in need of something to rack up big miles comfortably and cheaply. The A2 has fitted the bill admirably. A great wee car.

Hope your A2 is going well.

Hi Dan
And welcome too the forum
Goodluck with selecting your A2 personally i'd go for the diesel!
biased as i have one but my wife and daughter both have 1.4 petrol cars and i find they are always fuel heavy!
Anyway try both and go with what you like best:):)
I look forward to seeing your progress on trimming it and hope you will do a thread start too finish:):)
Anyway Welcome and enjoy
regards
Dave
