Hiya, LPG A2 from Yorkshire

Hiya one and all,

Just a quick intro, I have had my A2 for a few years and lurked a bit up till now.

Gas conversion gives about 80mpg equivalent.

My impressions of the car are it's great.

Change the front suspension twice now (84K miles) they just don't 'makem' like they used to:(

It seems the front does bounce around a lot in corners, asked when replacing springs if I could have the ones for the Sports model but was told they were all the same spec.

The other thing is that yellow light on the dash which flashes all the time especially round corners is a bit annoying

Oh and just tried to contact Lau to see if he will fix my CCU.

Welcome :)

Standard dampers seem to be the A2s downfall, a change makes a lot of difference.
I don't know how much an lpg tank weighs, it might be enough to make it roll more at the rear so a rear anti roll bar could help the electronic wagging finger.

Hi and welcome to the A2oc.

You are in a very exclusive club with the LPG conversion. The only other owner with LPG is Alan.

Cheers

Hi, welcome to the club. Very rare LPG conversion!

When you say 'bounce' do you mean when cornering over uneven surface, the front tyres seem to spend more time in the air than on the road? The standard factory dampers are very weak and so it feels very bouncy. Once I've changed to Konid FSD with the factory springs, it felt much better in uneven surfaced corners. The sports springs are firmer and lower and without stronger dampers, I reckon they will make things worse. Also, what PSI are you running with the fronts? I run about ~35PSI hot and it isn't too bad with winter tyre. I run lower with my hard summer rubber.

Definitely concur with Humps - sounds to me like your shocks are borked - well worth swapping them out and upgrading them with better ones like KoniFSDs, or perhaps the slightly cheaper option of the Monroe Reflex (similar technology)? Get all the strut top mounts and other bushes replaced at the same time.

OEM Audi Sport springs are not the same as the OEM SE springs; the springs are 10mm shorter, and the spring rate is significantly more stiff. Further, there are different springs depending upon which model of car you have, TDi vs petrol, with OpenSky etc as these change the weight of the car quite significantly.

You don't say if you have an SE or a Sport model?

An A2 with LPG conversion is very rare!

Thanks for the replies and the helpful comments.

I am encouraged with the ideas of a set of Koni dampers (all round or just the front?) and a rear anti roll bar will improve things.

With regards to the traction control issue I was going to ask what tyre size/brand you're running? And in terms of weight of the LPG tank, I'd be surprised if it was that that was making a difference as big as you have described - I occasionally have 50-60kg of music gear in the boot and I've not noticed anything like that, though I am running dead sticky Yokohamas on 17"s...

I agree with the others the suspension is probably knackered...bear in mind Konis are super expensive (you should replace all four) but not the only option, as there's many shocks you can use. Also in terms of the rear ARB, you should know that whether or not it has any effect has been called into question on here in the past (due to the nature of the rear axle) but I can't personally say as I've never driven with one!

Cheers

I've run LPG cars since the 70's .... I have converted them myself, even! Do you have a cylinder tank or doughnut fitted? Major drawback with LPG is the reduction in luggage capacity. I travel abroad a lot and would really miss it! Also, with a diesel achieving 60 mpg and qualifying for £30/yr road-fund, savings made by running on LPG are actually marginal. (LPG results in a 15-20% reduction in MPG over equivalent petrol figures.) I actually have my own liquid LPG filling facility, and even after paying Customs & Excise an additional "motor" duty, it is hard to justify an LPG conversion .... interesting, though .....

The light flashing and the bouncing around a probably more down to my driving than the shocks being knackered.

My last car was a Focus which despite my best efforts to get it out of shape it always remained composed even after loss off grip.
Same applies to the Passat I had before, so composed and controlled it was boring.

The tank is a 50 litre that they managed to squeeze into the subfloor so no loss of luggage space (sold the space saver tyre)

currently paying 62pence per litre on account and it is so nice filling it up. Really notice how good it is when I fill my motorbike up and it costs the same to fill it up as the car.

Well, the Focus does have a fantastic chassis and the A2 certainly can't live up to that, but I really have to be driving like a nutter to break traction on summer rubber with the 1.4 - goes round corners like s**t off a shovel on 17s!

**** will come off a shovel pretty fast, even on 17's. are you mixing up your metephors?

Do you mean 'Stick like **** to a blanket'

Seriously though we are not comparing like with like as I see you have the sport edition. (the one I should have, Swap?)
