Hot in the summer

I have had an ultra low mileage 2005 1.4 petrol special edition (9,500 miles) the grand total of 5 weeks, and although the climate control worked perfectly when I bought it, it now seems to be stuck on blasting out heat at the max temperature possible. Even if you put in on recirculate or 'lo' it still pumps through red hot air. It is probably 28C even though it is only 18C outside.

Tomorrow I will make an angry phone call to garage I bought it from, but it was definitely working perfectly when i bought it, so I am not expecting much sympathy. Anybody else had the same problem and how much did it cost to get fixed?

My wife and I positively love the A2, having had one a few years ago pre-kids, but this second one has not got off to a great start!

Thanks

That's happened to me twice in the six years I've owned my car. I don't know what caused it, but each time it was sorted when the car was serviced. Looking back over old invoices, I can't find any charges for components.

A quick check for the compressor is to see if the middle is turnable by hand when the engine is off. Take bonnet off, reach down to where the compressor is (bottom of the auxillary belt on the drivers side, below the alternator) and see if you can spin the middle bit. If you can, then the compressor has failed internally and you'll need a new one.

I've had 2 go in 6 years, although the second one was after an accident.

Cheers,

Mike

Have you tried a Vagcom diagnostic test to see if any fault codes are showing which might point to a particular sensor failure or similar ?

Thanks

Very impressed with so many prompt ideas. Thanks a lot. Just been out for a look.....and guess what? It is now mysteriously working again, though an odd whirry noise coming out central airvents that I have not heard before.

I think it requires watching carefully, and after next payday I may treat it to an aircon service and proper check. Despite the very low mileage and annual servicing I bet it's never had the aircon done properly. Probably be better safe than sorry.

I am a serious amateur when it comes to mechanics/electrics but am hoping to run this car for a long time. Conceptually and size wise it's so much better than the A1 and I would rather spend a bit keeping an older A2 going than watching a new A1 losing thousands doing only about 6,000 miles a year at most. I am aiming to have an A2 with less than 35k genuine miles by its 10th birthday.
