How Hard is Engine Change? Also BBY in a AUA?

Getting my ducks in line on a 'just in case basis'.* I've done a bit of spannering and have all the gear except a lift (so big jacks, selection of big stands, engine crane etc).

What sort of job is it to drop / change the engines on an A2? I take it they come out the bottom? I did have a search through every thread with 'engine' in the title (ten pages!) but no joy.

Also, I see the BBY is very, very plentiful (read - incredibly cheap): what are the hurdles to putting one in a AUA car: doable? Not worth it? I appreciate ignition system is different but are they plug and play?

Many thanks!

*Debate rages over whether my engine has piston slap or a knock: either way it's noisier than I'd ideally like.

I too have an FSI with a slight knock. I thought cam or followers but think its piston slap. Runs fine and can only be heard at idle.

This runs fine and, like yours, is most noticeable at idle. As the revs come up you can't here anything and it's very quiet when driving.

Engine go in from the front and top front end would need removing

Now mine's been driven for a couple of days I'm a bit more relaxed. The new oil has helped a lot and when in the car with a hot idle it's actually pretty quiet. I'll see how it goes, but it looks like there is a steady trickle of AUA's going through. If I went to the effort of a 'new' engine though I'd want some sort of evidence to prove it's a good one.
