How much fuel can you really squeeze in?

... or, how far can you get with the fuel light on?

My 2005 A2 (TDi 75) has the 42-litre tank. But the most I've ever managed to get in, filling from empty, is 36 litres. 34 is more typical. I fill up when the fuel level is at the bottom of the red zone, typically 40-odd miles after the low fuel warning light comes on.

Based on this I wonder:

1) Is there a knack to getting more fuel in? What's the most you've managed?
2) Am I being too conservative about when I stop for fuel? How far is everyone else going after the low fuel warning?

Cheers, Richard.

I normally fill up after the warning comes on and I've driven to my local garage (or supermarket if & when I use cheapo petrol). The most I've ever managed to get in the 42 litre tank has been 41.64 ~ must have been running on almost pure air that day!
I regularly get over 40 litres in.

I was dragging the dregs from the bottom of the tank through the system by running it so low to often so I won't make the same mistake with my A2...
Wise words we've all done it though lol !!!!
