Hi all been doing alot on the little a2 so wanted to help . The a2 tdi 75hp is able to have the drive shafts replaced without any need to mess up tracking or even taking off the wheels . Heres how and what you need .
Before lifting car your need undo the 36mm hub nut , or 19mm allen on factory driveshaft

Next leave bolt on the end of the thread and break it free from the locktight substance .
Next get the car up and on axle stands .
Once belly pan is off get the multi splines off the gear box end of the drive shaft . I use a 10mm spanner on the multi spline as the access angle is a pain .

Use your foot on the wheel to keep in place and work your way round the bolts .
Drivers side requires the upper cv gaiter gaurd to be removed which are two 16mm bolts.

Once this is removed you can push the drive shaft up towards the turbo manifold which will allow the end that was in the hub to come out then feed the hub end out between the casket and the sump the and out it will come .
New one in takes around 40 mins .

Passenger side same deal just no guard . If you get it stuck undo the engine dog bone 16mm gives you much more space but is not needed.

I have pictures and a walk through on the jdd conversion but will need the laptop as much more involved . Hope this helps

My way was to losen off one turn and use a hammer on the socket extension that broke the grip. plenty of thread on the drive shaft so did not cause damage . Wheel is still on the ground at that point may help , at least makes you feel better as it cant fall over while being rough. If any one is around loughborough and needs a hand let me know . Cheers kraig

Thanks Tom thanks for the kind words . I have them clocks when you need them. I ordered a cable for the vag commander. So more tools for the list. Let me know if you need any help as you helped so much . Cheers kraig

Many thanks Kraig for the tip , super helpful info ?

After putting it off for ages, after reading this thread, I today successfully changed the off side outer CV joint on my Tdi90.
I'd bought one of the hydraulic 'pushers' mentioned in other threads but didn't even need that.
I followed what you wrote, undid the nut, wound it back in, then 1.25 turns out, placed the larger end of a short extension in the concave of the nut and smacked the other end hard with a lump hammer a few times, wound the nut in and was only able to wind in 3/4 a turn!, wound out to 1.25 turns and repeated 3 times, I then jacked it up, removed the wheel and used a normal hub pusher and although it was hard, (as I was winding there was cracking of the locking compound), it worked fine and the CV joint was pushed from the hub :)
I've got the same job to do on my other tdi, hopefully It will be just as easy!

Thanks again,

Andy

Morning all,

Project OEM recently suffered from the violent shaking above 40mph, very worrying indeed and even more so as I had the boys and their friends in the car when this issue suddenly presented itself.

My thanks must go to Kraig for sharing this extremely helpful information.Having met him in the past I knew he was quite local so approached him for some advice. Kraig said order the parts and pop over where he would do the work for me.

I ordered the J&R drive shafts from eBay which came with everything required, they arrived next day and a date was set for Kraig to perform some surgery on my daily.

The task took a little longer than first thought as the OS was being stubborn and didn't want to come away from the hub, the NS however was removed in a very quick time.

Once the task was complete the 10 minute drive home felt great and reassuringly safe, the shaking has been rectified. Everything was torqued up to the specifications obtained from Graham @audifan, thank you for your advice Graham, very helpful, especially for responding so quickly on a weekend Sir.

The time I was parked up on Kraig's driveway was just brilliant, not a pause in conversation or the supply of beverages to keep us both going. Such a nice guy who has a lovely family that welcomed me into their home. Project OEM is all the more better to see it continue to perform its duties after some community spirited members input.

Thank you so much again Kraig for your time and dedication on a Saturday when you could have been with your wonderful family.

Kind regards,

Tom
