How to remove centre console to locate squeak

I've got the mother of all irritating squeaks which seems to come from inside the centre console, or possibly behind the radio/climate panels. I can faintly hear the squeak if I put pressure on the gear lever once it is in gear, so it must be inside the console somewhere. It is doing my head in and driving my wife mad as I am constantly pressing things and getting my hand stuck in holes while I am driving! It is worse every time I change gear and when I pull away, like the vibrations of engaging drive are irritating it. It started off only when it was cold, but now it's all the time and is louder than ever.

I have removed the gear lever gaiter and the cover that pulls off immediately in front of the gear lever and exposed 2 large torx screws, but how do I remove the rest of the console, and the panels on the sides by the footwells? I have searched but I couldn't find my answer.

Thanks.

you can't, if I remember right, without removing the seats. Have fun :)

I think you'll find it's the gear lever cable itself, rubbing along one of the aluminium parts down there. Take off the right hand footwell kickpanel and you'll see the linkage; move that and you should hear a difference in the sound.
Other than that, it will be one of the aluminium struts of the dash itself and they can be taken apart, felted and screwed back together again.

Footwell kickpanel is one tx20 towards the front, the rest is clips.

Cheers. Yes sounds like it could be the linkage as changes in the noise relate to the gear change. I'll take off the kickpanel and have a look. I assumed they were tucked under the centre console which is why I hadn't removed it so far.

Coincidentally this noise started almost immedialtely after having the cambelt changed. If it is the gear linkage, may this have been disturbed when the cambelt was changed?

Yes, it could be linked, as during fitting of the cambelt, the entire engine & gearbox are lifted slightly and this will mean that the routing could well change, resulting in the slight rubbing you;re hearing.

BTW, it's a T25 screw to remove the panel.

Cheers,

Mike

Sounds more and more like it is the cable then.

Cheers guys, at least that gives me something to look for.
