An update. I was outvoted so we ended up with an A1. Red and silver TDI 120k miles. Lovely condition. The A2 will need to wait until I have garage space ;)

I would say this is a safer choice.
Good luck and and a lot of safe driving for your boy.
 
Just to complete the story. The lad passed last Wednesday and is currently out and about in his A1.

Since I started this thread I've sold my 2002 Beetle Turbo and now currently don't actually own a car other than the Midget - which I'm contemplating also selling to make garage space - but for a MK1 Golf. No A2 on the horizon sadly.

Well, yes. This is true for all of us. Even @George Hogg may eventually run out of garage space. But we all know that, whatever your garage capacity, you buy an A2 and then consider what else you may have space for. Pretending that other cars are somehow worthy of consideration ahead of an A2 is just a temporary delusion. Buy an A2. All further decisions will then become clear. 🙂
