I got sold a Lemon, can I make lemonade ?

Good Afternoon Jason,

Yes, the climate panels will strip down to get at the buttons, you will only need a torx T6 driver, I am sure you will find it no problem with your experience.

Very similar to swapping the buttons on a radio and a guide for your perusal I wrote some time ago, the main difference a ribbon cable rather than a push fit multi pin connects the button housing.

In the highly unlikely event you need help arrange to pop round.

Andy
Hi Andy, do you know which climate control buttons are compatible?
I just tried to fit some from an A3 but they are ever so slightly different. i.e. the slider channel part is slightly lower

You have been unlucky, most seem suitable but I have heard just the occasional one does not work. Aim for A4 B5 buttons.

Well it did it’s first commute in a couple of weeks yesterday.

The new gearbox and remap combo are excellent I have to say! Very pleased with the results despite the pain to get there.

Just splashed out on some other bits to celebrate. It’s getting there!

Yep watched it last night.

Again you stirred distant memories of the less romantic aspects of old banger fiddling - major mechanical surgery on a driveway when it’s raining!

Would really be interested in a driving report once you’ve lived with the results for a while - so far I only think @depronman and one other has done a write-up, there’s certainly a very low sample of owners who have described the change in driving experience - which is strange given this mod has been known for almost a decade and supposedly massively improves the diesel A2 in most respects.

From that small sample, I believe Paul said there were no drawbacks whilst the other chap commented on there being a sometimes noticeable gap between the gears that dictated how you should drive it - and therefore in certain conditions the spread of gears may not be ideal.

Great vid!!

Will part 2 show how you modify the box and add the spacers?

Keep up the great work, sure is hard on your back!

Yeah I have some thoughts on it which I will use to sum up the end of the fitting video!

I think I'm somewhere in-between the two but, spoiler alert, overall I'd say its a positive change. Obviously I combined mine with a remap which may skew the data a touch.

Thanks for watching :)

Yes absolutely! I still need to tweak some of the mods I did as well so will include that.

My Hero!

In terms of the jdd box or any other box that increases the gear ratios and that includes the long 5th gear mod to the std gearbox this MUST be done only on a car which as a good remap on it. Without the remap the engine will simply not have enough torque to cope with the increase in gear ratio in top gear

Nope - as Paul says, a remap is a pre-requisite, so your data is / will be good :)

Wouldn't that just mean that you need to get the revs up into the torque curve? According to my info it is not good to drive with to low rpms on cars with DMF, because it destroys it. And also I do not like to feel the engine ''shaking''.
So I was under impression that this mod would just allow you to lower the rpms on highway for example to 2000 rpm, where the torque curve is already high. Of course at lower speed you would need to ''drag'' the lower gear longer.

I was thinking similar as what map do the donor blue motion Polo's have? (I do have a ecu supplied from Depronman thou)

Without a remap even getting the engine to peak torque which it a rather narrow band would still mean there was only just enough to pull the higher gearing
The remap highest and spreads wider the torque band

Here's my remap from stock 90bhp atl to 123bhp no mods but new clutch and dmf and turbo. Mpg same but drives smoother and quieter, just advanced timing touch. Noticed belt tensioner on auxiallry no longer shakes. Very very pleased with it. I drive it steady most of the time

How can be torque wider? If there are not enough exaust gases to spin the turbo, there is no torque gain sooner. Only higher torque when turbo starts getting exaust gases. Gain of torque before that can be achieved, but it is really miniscule.
I do not see it also in the @CrispyEdd graph (torque sooner).
I can see less torque dip after the max torque (between 2.000 and 3.000 rpm), so basically you are right regarding wider torque, but that is just opposite of transmission tweak, where you want to get lower rpm, isn’t it?
