I think I’ve reached the end

Wow, that's still original. Replace.

Could anyone please tell me exactly what I need to be looking for. I know it’s an 096 but do the numbers need to be the same.

Varta F19 is the ideal replacement. Same size, better performance.

One bit of advise when fitting the Varta battery into an A2 is to make sure you remove the little plastic tabs which are on the bottom "Lip" of the battery where it gets clamped to, otherwise it moves around a bit in the footwell

Update - fitted the new battery. I was probably clutching at straws hoping it’d sort the start issue. Wishful thinking. Still struggling to start. Hoping it was gassed up. Will try again in the morning. Looks like the dealers after all then.

Thanks for all the advice and recommendations regarding this issue.

Likely a fuel / fueling related issue then

Contaminated fuel possibly?
High pressure pump replaced or tank sender unit?

Probably need live data next for further diagnosis

Once it starts, it runs like a dream. So don’t think it’s a fuel problem, It’s just that initial fire up that’s the issue. Shame you can’t post videos on here. Could show what it does.

Could it be a blocked breather tube? Try carcking your petrol cap slightly before you try and start it.
I had this problem on my car and it took me ages to work out what was wrong.

Thanks. I’ll have a look at that later. Did yours run fine after it had started? Is it anything to do with the crankcase breather or is it fuel tank related?

Could I just ask (I’m an amateur on the spanners) where I would locate this breather tube. Is it the same as the fuel tank breather valve?

Thanks.

Just a thought, and I'm wondering if I have mentioned before, but with JRV it would be difficult to start it if it had less than about 1/3 of a tank of fuel in, again once started it ran fine, and as soon as it was topped up over half way it started on the button ...

Hi. You said earlier that your fuel gauge suddenly worked after a jump start. Can you rely on it?? Put in some fuel and try to start car again. This does sound like a fuel issue. Do all your electrics work as normal? Door open light on and fuel release flap /alarm deactivate button illuminated?

Look at a post earlier on
Fuse Box Fuse 18 fuel pump - fault code p1020
Does your fuel pump run for a few seconds when you unlock drivers door and open it?
A lot more info in that post.

The fuel gauge is moving but isn’t accurate. Ever since I put a pierburg fuel pump in it, the gauge is in reverse. But now it is at the tip of the red square and stays there no matter how much is in there. I only put £20 in a few days ago so know it’s not empty.

I’ve been trying to listen for the fuel pump priming but don’t really hear anything.

Everything electrical works. However, the alarm deactivate button came apart ages ago. A spring fell out and couldn’t find it. Got it back together. Unsure wether it illuminates or not tbh. Could this not working cause issues?

I’ll check the fuse tomorrow and look at this alarm button.

Thanks.
