Hello I'm new here.

I'm for 95% sure there will come a audi A2 to replace my ford focus (lease-car from company)
I'm already own a audi urquattro (my nickname say enough:) )and i'm a real audi-fan.

I'm interrested in what's your top-speed on speedo-meter in a original audi A2 1.4TDI. I've the idea that 75ps on higher speed will not enough. Maybe I'm wrong!

(sorry for my poor english language)

urquattro83,

I'm also from the Netherlands. My VDO Dayton system gives a topspeed of 175 km/h. I trust the navigation system better than the speedometer in the car.

I'm not from the Netherlands, but share the mothertongue (though not the accent ;)
I've reached 190 km/h on the speedo a few times (on a level road), and that was about all the way. Quite fast enough, if you ask me. I once accelerated (with 4 people + luggage) on a very
steep incline from 120km/h to 160km/h (E411 motorway Brussels-Luxemburg for those who would be familiar). My 2.0E petrol Audi 100 could not do so. My 65 hp 205 diesel could barely manage 100km/h on the same stretch, with just me inside. I'm very happy with the 75 horses, saves quite a lot on taxes and insurance.

Thats almost 119mph - wow! The most I have managed is a shade under 110mph (176kph ish)

I've reached 190 km/h on the indicator too, but my GPS tells me that that equals 175 km/h.

I'm not sure I understand this topic chaps. Do we all really want to go this fast? I used to tear around in my old Saxo VTR, and I tell you what, I have a whole lot more fun driving at more 'normal' speeds in my A2!
Dont get me wrong, I dont hang about in the A2, but the whole driving experience is much more, well, civilised.

Now where did I put my slippers and pipe...? ;)

Sorry Phil - forget my age sometimes!!! I very rarely go above 85mph in the A2 - only ever gone over 100 a couple of times just to see.

Although my eagerness to provide answers to this new guy seems to prove the opposite, I totally agree with the both of you, Phil & Kaine.
But every now and then, in the middle of the night or on that otherwise lonely piece of highway, I just can't resist. Pedal to the metal, and keep it there for a minute or 10. Then drop back to about 90mph, which then feels like crawling.
I don't have DIS, so I don't worry about the whirlpool in my tank...

At any other moment I'm, as Phil puts it, a civilised sensible driver, just enjoying the car!

The most I have gotten from mine is 190kph on a level road and 195 going downhill...
The interesting thing is that the 1.2 has 14 hp less and reaches nearly the same speeds...

Bye, Frido.

The 1.2's gearbox is better suited to higher speeds. In the 1.4 the engine does somewhere near 4300 rpm when doing those 190 km/h. That is awfully close to the redline. And it definitely is past the peak in both engine power and torque. Combine that with the amount of drag you get at those speeds, and it just won't go any further.

So my guess is that at those speeds, the 1.2 develops more HP than the 1.4, because the rpm is closer to its optimum. (edit: the 1.2 is also more streamlined with its lower drag coefficient, which probably helps the most!) Also see this PDF from Abt Sportsline:

http://80.81.7.110/Downloads/Datenblaetter/AUDI/A2/Amf_095/A2_114_095_AMF.pdf

Peak HP is at about 4000 rpm, peak torque around 2200.

Furthermore, the graph matches my own experience: if you want to really pull away on the highway, you should do so with rpm's between 2 and 3000. So don't shift back to get an RPM of about 3000...

Cheers,
Edo

Phil, these were exceptions. I would not be able to get my 67 mpg if I did this regularly.
I hardly ever go beyond 120 kmh (75mph). But I did reach 190kmh twice, for half a minute or so,
on an empty stretch.
