Hello,

I've just got my new A2 and plan on putting in a different head unit. Can anyone advise me on the installation? Where's the cheapest place to get the fascia/bracket thingy to fit the new unit in. Does anyone know the speaker sizes for the A2?

Any other advice or experiences (like how easy is it removing the standard existing unit / tips etc..) you've had installing a new head unit, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Had a few problems changing my head unit and stereo installation company had to destroy the old streo before they were able to get it out!!! This was a delicate operation that invloved the use of a hammer!

Loads of places to get the facias and 'fill-ins' for the side of the head unit - apparently Halfords do some neat clip on facias that don't need screw fittings.

Thanks guys but there must be more people out there who've replaced their original head units. Isn't there anyone else who can give me some tips on things like how to easily remove the front fascia/dash blah blah blah....... I really don't want to have to use a company where they destroy the original HU ;)

Cheers!!!!

Hi,

At the bottom of the head unit there are 2 small flat recesses this is where you insert the extractor keys (borrow then from Audi - Take the head unit out in there car park as they won't let you take them away)
You can buy direct from Audi a face plate to take a DIN size head unit this will match the existing materials.

Hope this helps.

Stevet110 - once you have removed the original stereo, the rest is dead easy.

You'll need to buy a fascia adapter kit which inserts two small plastic strips either side of your new stereo. You'll also need a harness adapter kit which means you won't need to cut the existing Audi wiring loom to fit to your new stereo - assuming it has an standard ISO connector, which most of them do these days.

Visit www.incardiscount.co.uk - they sell everything I've listed above at good prices - sadly no club discount with them yet!

The end result looks like this: http://www.audi-a2.co.uk/uk1.htm

2001 TDi SE | Cobalt Blue Metallic | Open Sky Roof | Kenwood Mask CD | Front Centre Armrest

That's fantastic, thank you so much for your advice, really appreciated. Can't wait till it's all done and can send the pics in. :)

Hi, Just had my really naff chorus head unit replaced with a Kenwood KDC-MV6521 which I got discounted (cost) since it was the last in stock and no longer made. Also added 13cm speakers for the rear with tweeters beside the rear handles. The connectors and cable cost £3, the cable from the rear door to the head unit cost £6.80 and the facia which is an A2/TT adapter cost £8.50. Labour £128 which is 4hrs at £32.00

The Kenwood unit plays mp3's which I decide to get instead of a multi-changer as I can get a lot more albums on a CDR or CD-RW.

Hi again,

I've got the headunit now and am in the process of fitting it. I bought the Clarion VRX928RVD. Naively I didn't think there'd be much to installing it. For just a headunit there are so many cables and even a seperate control unit.

However, could someone tell me how you fit those two little plastic bits that go either side of the headunit. There are the holes to screw them in but it's as if you have to do it from the other side (as in from inside the DIN space). Seems a bit awkward.

Once again guys, thanks.

(rmallan: I like the look of that Kenwood HU [8D])

Hi stevet110,
what original stereo unit do you have? If it is the Concert II/Symphony, do you want to sell it? I have an early Chorus, with cassette and want an audi cd unit.
Regards
Brack
