intermittant speaker

Hi all, I`ve got a 52 plate 1.6 FSI with intermittent speaker failure. The rear nearside speaker has never worked whilst I`ve had the car, (2 years), I`ve had the door card off, no loose wires, no obvious causes, so I just live with it. Recently though the front offside speaker has started to "loose audio", ie no sound but if I go over a bump in the road, or turn the volume right up, the speaker kicks back in for a while, then goes off again. I will be taking a look at it next weekend, any ideas or pointers on what to look for . I`m thinking probably not a loose connection because simply turning up the volume brings the speaker back, then I turn volume down and the speaker goes off about a minute later. Thanks, Daz.

Yes Audi concert.

rear nearside woofer & tweeter never worked, now front offside woofer and tweeter are intermittently down ?

Hi,
I have had the same thing on the front speaker on one of my A2s, all I do is to turn the volume up, the speaker kicks back in again and I can then lower the volume and all is well.

I suspect it may be an amplifier problem within the radio (one of the channels) The wiring seems fine!

This type of fault is easy to solve by transposing speakers. So, after swapping, the "fault" then goes to the other side, then it's the speaker. If the fault stays with the same position, then the head-unit is at fault. I have many speakers and both single and D-Din units, spare. I can help you, there ....

I've had a similar issue with front nearside speaker.
Turned out to be door/pillar connector, moisture found it's way in and a few pins corroded.
Same with both rear door connectors, but in that case there was no open door info.

Cheers,
Neo

Cheers guys, I`ll have a look-see over the weekend at the cables/connectors/pins etc, not sure what a volume pot is in the radio so may just have to live with it ?

Hey any resolution to this probelm I too have a similar issue and s gonna ask at the garage about it on Monday when I wheel the old girl in for a service!

Any info appreciated so I can clue the guys up!

Hi
I think taffy many people believe that it is a fault in the head unit itself. Rather than in the speaker / wiring.

But there is no conclusive proof. The only way is to try swapping the radio for another one (if you have anyone local that would help with that) or tracing the wiring from speaker to head unit.

But since it is an intermittent fault it makes it harder to trace.
I would duggest that before you go to the garage try to see if you can figure out how to trigger the fault on demand.
For me it was using low volumes.
That way your garage will have a better chance of fixing it.

Sorry I can't help much, this is a tricky one

Resurrecting an old thread - my driver's side front speaker is noticeably quieter compared with the rest: It works but it's like it's always turned down compared with the others - I have to use the balance and fader to compensate.

From the above I see the diagnosis route is to swap the front speakers, cleaning connections as I go at both the speaker and head unit ends (any tips / recommendations on how / products?) - then if the fault is still present on the same side, the issue is with the head unit and not the speaker or wiring.

Has anyone else had any experience of similar issues they can pitch in with?

the volume pot is known to be flaky on some devices. If that has no definitive bearing (and / or cold does not make a difference) then the speaker connections are your next port of call.

In my experience, dodgy connections to the door speakers are mostly found at the door hinge connectors. Frequently, simply unmating/mating the connector is enough to cure the problem. The multi-pin connectors at the door hinges aren't the easiest to undo if you've never done so before, because they're locked together by a series of clips/sliders/tabs that need to be released in the correct order.
Sometimes I've also found that the 2-pin connector at the speaker itself is the problem.
Merlin has Bose, so there are no speaker connections at the head unit itself.

It could, of course, be that the speaker itself is faulty. As you say, swapping it from one side to the other will help to diagnose/eliminate that option.

Cheers,

Tom

The connecrtion to my drivers door speaker is so borderline that just turning up the volume brings it back. One day I'll take apart the connector and clean it properly.

Had to clean all door hinge connectors too.
Fronts because passenger door would not unlock from fob, one pin corroded away in connector, and since it was so nice and green, did other side too + took out speaker pins and gave them extra cleaning.

Rears because one side speaker randomly was not very productive at creating sounds and moving harness near door connector made it better or worse. So gave them both cleaning (pins out for extra effect)...

On pic slightly cleaned connector with lost pin stuck in third hole + speaker pins removed for extra cleaning.

But as said, it's not easiest to do and just reconnecting it few times would be a start. But if there is too much green corrosion visible, it should get more attention, since it may come to bite later...
