intermittent engine stutter

Hello All,

I've had my A2 for about 6 years and it's a great little car however I've recently started having a problem which neither me or my independent Audi mechanic can figure out.

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem and can offer some insight?

When cruising with consistent revs (it doesn't matter what speed or gear) every now and again the engine will stutter, almost like a misfire and sometimes stalls. When it first started happening, the EPC light and the red exclamation mark on the dash would come on. I took it to my regular and trusted mechanic and he did scan. The readout said there was a fault with the break light sensor so he replaced it and said see how it goes. The problem was still there however, I was no longer getting the warning lights on the dash. I took it back in and my mechanic gave it a once over checking the usual plugs etc and also cleaning out the throttle and resetting it. He also scanned again with no error present.

The problem is very intermittent and the car can be fine for a few days but every now and again I'll get this engine stutter. I can sense when it's coming now and if I ease of the accelerator when it's just about to happen, it prevents the stuttering. I'm not doing long journeys and I average about 20 miles/day back and forth to work.

If anyone has had this problem before or can offer any advice, I'd be very grateful.

Sounds to me like it might be some sort of fuelling problem.
Ideally to track this sort of thing down you need to run with data logging so you can see what is happening. Intermittent problems are the worst.

Two cheap and easy things to try are ---- new fuel filter----clean the throttle body. Good luck mike
 
Also put some good fuel in it, Tesco Momentum and some Petrol Injector Cleaner. Check the earths are clean and that the battery connections are also tight.

my A2 did that when i first got her, unsure of exact fix ,as had new plugs and cleaned throatle body ect and fault was still there but after i cleaned the egr valve as it was seized solid with soot, gunk ect and refitted with new gaskets, plus at the same time i cleaned all the earthing points in footwells and behind nearside headligfht on chassie rail it curred my stuttering.
