Intermittent loss of right channel

Have had my 2001 A2 1.4 for 2 months now. Very pleased !! Had spinal surgery in March and could not get in and out of my A4 TDI sport anymore - so it had to go. Bought the A2 - easier to use and still has that Audi feel.
It is fitted with a Symphony II, and has developed an annoying fault. It switches on with just the left speakers and needs an increase in volume until the right side eventually kicks in. Once it kicks in, it stays in ! I do not loose the r side over bumps or anything so does not point to loose connections. Has anybody experienced similar ?

Hi dlaundon, welcome to the A2oc
Hope I'm not insulting your intelligence but is the balance control set correctly

Cheers Spike

Insult my intelligence ??

Hi

Thanks for the welcome. Don't mind the suggestion at all !
Yes balance control is set fine ! At a certain volume, not always the same level, the rh side kicks in all of a sudden, but not at switch on !

Audi A2 - Symphony II, Climate control, 16" 6 spoke (got rid of the 15" chrome) - just love the look of the 6 spokers !!

Sounds like a tiny component fault - the more volume there is = more voltage and it seems that at a certain (variable) level, this is enough to kick whatever component is at fault into life.

Get it to an Audi dealer if you're under warranty. If both the front and rear speakers are affected equally, it's not going to be an amp problem, but if it is only the rears, then my money is on a faulty Blaupunkt amp, which is located under the drivers feet.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for that. Does make sense more volume=more voltage ! No warranty so will try a local car audio specialist to see if they can test it out.

Hi, I have noticed the same fault on my Concert II HU while fitting my Phatbox. I thought that it was something I did wrong while wiring it up.
Anyway, I'm not driving it much at the moment because of an operation so have not had the chance to investigate more.

dlaundon if you find out what was causing it I would be interested to hear about it.

I came to the conclusion that Mike was right about the volume/voltage thing. I have just learned to live with it now. My A2 is out of warranty, and if at some point it gets too annoying, I will put a replacement Symphony unit in. It does behave like a dicky component. Switch it on - only the left channel - turn the volume up past 15 - the right stutters in and then stays, even if you turn the volume back down. Quirky but there you are !

If you have any A2 owning friends, you can try swapping out your headunit with a known to be working one, temporarily. This will show if the fault is with the headunit itself, or the speakers (very unlikely to be the wiring, although there could be a capacitor inline with the speakers to attenuate the bass frequencies).

If the problem is still there, then the headunit is fine and you can then investigate the speakers (not the easiest thing to do, but certainly cheaper to rectify than a new Concert/Chorus/Symphony).

If you're going to Castle Combe, I daresay someone may help you out with a headunit swap.

Cheers,

Mike

If you can make it to Castle Combe, I can bring my spare Symphony II to try... or you are welcome to try it at a future stage.

Last time I ran a vagcom check it showed a fault on RH front speaker, which I had never noticed. Lo and behold, when flicking balance to the right, sound was only coming from the RH tweeter. I will try increasing the volume to see if this will kick mine into life as well - currently I assumed a failure of the main speaker.

Hi all.
I too have had this fault for some time on my A2, I thought it was maybe a wiring fault (im no mechanic), and had just put it down to a quirky fault. Nearly everytime I got in and switched on the rh speaker, it would just be dead. Mentioned it to my local Audi ctr when it went in for a service and they couldnt find anything wrong with it.
Luckily I havent had the fault occur as much over the last year, but then again I have been playing my music loud (more volume=more voltage).

Still its only one quirky fault and nothing i cant live with. Hope next weekend goes well at castle combe, would be there myself but Im doing more overtime to pay for new (not so quirky) alloys.
