Is there a recommended make of replacement aircon pump?

True to form, on Saturday in 30-degree heat, I found my aircon not working. I'm told the pump is knackered, because the clutch isn't engaging. Given its age, I'm not averse to the idea of replacing the whole pump, but would welcome any suggestions for good replacement pump makes, and also any to avoid.

Unlike 'traditional' aircon pumps, ours does not have a clutch. It runs all the time but variable pumping elements control the flow of refrigerant depending on the cabin cooling requirements. Even when the aircon is switched off it runs at approx. 3% of max capacity.

There are several sensors and motorised flaps which control the airflow and temperature and these do go wrong - so its always good to start with a diagnostic scan before looking at pump replacement or even a re-gas

Just remembered, It's a rare occurrence but if the aircon pump seizes up there is a rubber element in the pulley which slips under extreme load and allows the pulley to rotate without throwing the belt off.

Thanks, both. Apparently the system has pressure, the right current goes to the pump when it should but there's no cooling action. The garage said it needed some more investigation, but a new pump is a possibility. As they say in Italy, vediamo.
 
A scan is a must - I have very similar symptoms on Tank at the moment. Went to a local specialist today to check the system was fully gassed and without leaks which it was and they also said it was the pump.
However, I also did a scan there and then and it showed the G65 sensor was at fault - this is the high pressure sensor which tells the system that the circuit is up to pressure and so allows it all to work.

A new pump is going to be around £120-140. A new sensor is around £50-55. Both parts when replaced, should then have the system filled before you run the engine to avoid siezures from a lack of lubricant.
 
The G65 can be replaced without re-gassing - there is a Schrader-like valve underneath it.

Which often is stuck in the open position, or at the very least, you'l lose some gas/oil from the system, so you would be wise to plan on doing the job when you know you have access to a mobile re-gasser.
