Is this a reasonable deal?

Hi All

I've been thinking about buying an A2 for a few years now as I think they are wonderful cars and I think I have found one that fills the bill. It's a TDI SE with open sky, bose and leather. It has 45,000 miles on the clock and is 5 years old. I haven't been to see it yet, but it looks to be in good nick. The asking price is £8,500 from a non Audi dealer.

Does this sound reasonable?

Would you say the A2 wears well - that is, am I ok buying quite an old one?

Thanks for any advice!

Ian

Sounds like this car has all the toys
but although it has low mileage at £8.500
seems a little on the pricey side for a car that is
5 years old ..........

Mmmmm sounds a bit expensive to me. I paid that for my A2 with only 10,000 on the clock and 2.5 years old. I would say mine hasnt got all the extras on it but it is still an A2 and its great. I got mine from a Audi/VW dealership so at least I got a good warrnety. Not sure what sort of warranty you would get from a non Audi dealer. Also would the non Audi dealer be able to fix any problems that may occur.

I got mine for £8500 6 months ago, its a 52 plate (feb 2003) 1.6fsi with 22k on the clock, and opensky (see piccy below!), but no bose or leather.

I think I may have found it on autotrader, is it a black 51 reg? if so its late 2000/early 2001, which makes it between about 12-18 months older than mine, but with more miles, mine was a private sale, which was a very good deal, so actually it doesn't seem too bad pricewise, what sort of warranty is the dealer offering? Does it have fsh?

Picture on autotrader does look nice though...;)

Hi Edward
My SE TDi is a similar age and has developed a few electrical faults recently - coolant temp sensor, tailgate lock microswitch and the G 263 sensor for the climate control. This requires removal of the dashboard to get at the £15 temp sensor!!!!
Back to your car - the combination of Bose, Open Sky and Leather is pretty rare so if you really want these options then go for it. I would however suggest you insist on a diagnostic check by an Audi dealer or friendly Vag-Com owner to ensure there are no expensive faults which may not be picked up on a test drive.
As the guys above suggest, a good warranty is also a must.

Cheers Spike

Thanks very much for the advice all - it was really useful! I rang the trader this morning. I have decided not to take it further as the service history is a bit dodgy - a service was carried out by AUDI at 19,000 miles, but there has been no service since. The chap I spoke at the (Volkswagon/AUDI specialist) garage said it should have had a service at 40,000 miles(I'm inclined to think this lack of attention could reflect a more general lack of care). They would service it before selling. Warranty is for 6 months.

(Yes TallPaul, it's the one on Autotrader - Blackpool area)

So I'll just keep looking - I'm not really bothered about leather, but the rest of the spec is just what I want.

Thanks again!!

If the car is on variable service and had been doing mostly main road driving (rather than town work) then 30000 miles before another service would be normal - i.e. 49,000 miles. The service indicator on the dash would show whether this was the case.... So the servicing could be correct!

Many thanks for your comments, they may well prove useful in respect of other A2s, but I have decided I don't want to pursue this particular car in any event.

Cheers

However, the variable service will call the car in after 24 months between services regardless of mileage. The car is 5 years old, so assuming it went to 2 years for it's first service the second one would have been due at 4 years old, so it's at least 12 months overdue!

Good point! Didn't think about the time aspect....
