Hi all,
Last friday I was finally able to wrap my fingers around the steering wheel of my very own A2. I could not be happier! [8D]
As you probably recall from my earlier posts, the 1st A2 they built 'for me' lacked Climate Control. But this one comes in one piece, everything as it should be, albeit lacking the chiptuning because (as the dealer put it) the engine codes had not been released yet.
So what am I driving? Here goes:
- A2 1.4 Tdi, soon to be chipped by Audi to about 90 bhp and unknown torque
- Sea-silver metallic
- 'Exclusive' package (or as it is now called: Proline), meaning color-coded doorhandles, mirrors, Climate Control, Remote Central Door Locking, vanity mirror lights (but you all know that )
- 6-spoke 16" rims (still the best, even though everyone has them, as in the A2OC logo)
- black interior/dash
- sport seats in front
No stereo yet, but I'm tempted to spend another 450 on either a JVC KD-SH9101 or a Pioneer DEH-77MP. Still have my own speakers by Infinity, so I'll be stripping the doors soon. (I know there are pictures on this forum, yes)
Well, I have done nearly 800 km this weekend, and this is what I think so far:
LIKES
-----
- Look and feel, both inside and outside. This car is great!
- The model changes from 2001 (or 2002?) to 2003: wiper, washer yets, suspension, dir. indicator 'clicks': it's all better. (I went on a 4000 km holiday in a 2002 petrol A2, so I was able to compare!)
- 1.4 Tdi Engine! Though not a diesel driver, this one feels great. I love the urge of the turbo in all gears and especially between 2000 and 3000 rpm. Just too bad it dies off towards 4000. But that's the (7000 rpm) Honda driver in me
- outside light sensitivity of dash lighting. In the 2002 A2 you could dim it, but it could be too dim during the day and/or to bright at night. This A2 adds his own thoughts to the dash light level. Very clever.
DISLIKES
--------
- Engine noise. I can live with diesel rambling. And I was curious about the 'sporty note' that this three cylinder should have. But the 'note' is a mighty loud 'VROOOAAAP' that resonates the interior at speeds between 120 and 140 km/h. Stay below 110 and it's great, but above: TOO LOUD, TOO CONSTANT! I don't mind the VROoAAP while accellerating; I could call that sporty...but the booming on the highway: no.
- fuel consumption. Though this was only the first run, it figured out to 17.8 km/liter, not impressed (yet). Didn't push it that much, I thought. Lots of highway km.
- car sounds like it is chased by an airplane with engine revs between 2600 and 3000 (and yes, that's around the 120km/h speed - legal speed in Holland). Something resonates, maybe the exhaust somewhere. I will definately have this checked. Not normal.
All in all, I know I'm going to love this car. Getting it chipped must be a great experience. And the noise will grow on me. And the new stereo should just be loud enough to surpass it!
However, if anyone cares to comment on the engine noise, or compare it to their experience, I might feel better about living with it, or having the dealer look at it, depending on the outcome.
Cheers,
Edo
