Its Official - I have an A2

Evening All,

Just to let you all know, I am now the proud owner of an A2. Having driven 130miles to check her out, she was all I expected. Part ex-d my car and drove her back, now all I have to do it wait for tomorrow to get some pics!

Only slight down side, was when I got there, he told me the radio had stopped, and when looking at the car she didn't have a parcel shelf... Good side is I managed to get a few more ££££ knocked off.

While driving I did spot a few things, so hopefully someone can assist:

The speedo seems to tick lick a clock while accelerating, the needle move upwards in a very tick tock sort of fashion. Its smooth on the decline, but going up jumps in knotches? Any ideas?

Also, the clutch is very close to the top, having gone from a DSG box to this it was rather odd, does this sound like a new one will be needed soon!

Thanks in advance,
Iain

Hi Iain, welcome to the A2oc and A2 ownership.

Parcel shelfs come up on eBay reasonably frequently, but they normaly fetch good money.

You would need to give the car a scan to find out what's going on with the radio.

From memory i think my clutch is reasonably high and that's a quite new clutch.

For the speedo not sure on that one. Not come accross that one before.

Even though we all know what a A2 looks like we always love to see pics of members cars, so looking forward to seeing pics of yours:)

Cheers

David

Thanks David, the car is great.

Cut a long story short, its actually our car bought back after a few years...we had it new from Audi, sold it, regretted it, then low and behold it appeared on the web just as we were looking for something to run about in... Couldn't say no really. Still had all the paper work with my (then girl friend, now wife)'s name on...

Will keep an eye on e-bay for the shelf.

Will dust off the old cable for VAG Com and check the radio, but it won't even power on so I'm not holding out much hope.

Speedo, ok well, if I get a chance i'll take a quick video of it and post, it really is odd.

Clutch, I've no idea if its new or not, nothing to say it is, but its right at the top and juddered a bit with my lack of manual clutch control...

Thanks again,
Iain

Wow what a great story. Your A2 is back home:)

Well your clutch sounds like it could be near to the end of its life if it's right at the top. What mileadge are you at?

Cheers

David

Hi Ian
Is it the 1.4 petrol? Mine is and it judders all the time when you pull away. I heard on here that all 1.4's suffer the same.

My clutch release bearing went that gave the same symptoms. clutch friction plate itself wasnt too bad but the pressure plate had score marks in it. If you intend to keep the car imo i'd change the clutch.

Grats on getting the car back :)
Our clutch was quite high and car not pulling as expected.....one clutch changed and it is a different car :)

Good luck

Thanks all, your information is great.

David - the car has just done 90k

Shell73 - Its the 1.6 FSI, so I guess i'm out of luck thinking its that.

Kook - thanks, that's most probably what I am going to have to do, if I can't get used to it or indeed it is going.

Draggon - thanks also, I get the feeling its going to be a new clutch.

Will as promised, get some photos up asap, but have been left holding the child, while wife went to London to support her brother in the Marathon, so its been impossible...

If the clutch engages only at the very end of the pedal's travel, then chances are that your clutch is nearing the end of its life.

Your speedo issue is bizarre - not a fault I've seen/heard about before. It could be that the speedo drive (attached to the gearbox) is on the blink. It could also be that you've got a faulty instrument cluster, though that strikes me as unlikely.

Given that your radio won't even turn on, I'd first be inclined to pull the unit out of the dash and check the wiring. It could be that someone didn't replace the power connector properly and it's worked itself loose.

Also, I've got a parcel shelf, but it's for the relatively uncommon Twist interior; it's a creamy/biscuity colour. I somehow doubt your Storm has that colour interior, but though it was worth a mention.

All the best,

Tom

Tom,

Thanks, first think i have pulled out is the radio, hoping to get the multimeter on it at lunch today, shed some light on the cause.

I will grab a video of the speedo problem, only seems to happen between 25 and 40 on closer inspection?

Clutch is right at the top, peddle almost fully released, there is pressure all the way down, but it only bites at the very top.

Will keep you all posted, thanks for all the great advise!

Regards,
Iain

Update on the Radio, tested the power and its got 12V on the ISO plug, and a switched 12V on the KBus connector. Plugged in the stereo and nothing, not even a light? Checked the fuse in the back and its OK, so guess its the radio that stopped?

Out of interest, without the radio in, how would I know if the A2 has rear speakers? The connector at the top with all the wires for CD / Can Low / RR etc has cables in the right pins, is there a way to test this?

Thanks in advance,
Iain
