VAG have announced that non-profitable models including the A2 and the Lupo will not be replaced at the end of their life cycle (Today's Times - business section).

I'm not sure how I feel about having an obsolete car which is only a few months old.....but on the upside I did see two in a day for the first time yesterday! (Obviously apart from at Audi dealers who usually have about 30).

Oh dear! Looks like a genuine story, with VAG wanting to ensure that developments in future are profitable.

In my view, the demand for quality smaller cars will increase over time, but it is too early yet to be successful with a car like the A2. I have had a lot of people recently say to me that they are considering an A2 or similar - those who usually drive bigger cars, like E class Mercs, for example.

VAG will probably drop the A2 just as demand starts to build!

Does anyone know how long the "life cycle" is likely to be? I'll want to get another one while I still can...

Paul.
I totally agree with your comments. I feel the smaller, higher build quality car will soon be thriving.
The way the tax laws currently stand in the country I'm very surprised that large car sales haven't plummeted already.

With the build quality of the A2 and the low tax brackets it attracts I can see all reps/bosses down sizing before long.

Just my opinion.

Er, this is a newspaper report.
When was the last time you saw an accurate newspaper report?

Its on the front page of yesterday's business section in The Times, under Briefing - about a 12 line summary. Its very unlikely that this is going to be untrue.

I don't have access to a scanner - but I'm sure it is also available through The Times website.

Someone else must however get The Times and have access to a scanner.

I don't buy it. Very recently (like one week ago), one of the managers of Audi Deutschland firmly denied these rumours.

I read a similar, though small article in a well known Dutch automagazine lately.
In that article they said that VAG wanted to reconsider their policy of models, especially those models that compete each other:
VW Lupo/Seat Arosa, VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra, VW Passat/Skoda Superb, etc.
The Audi A2 might be a rival to a new model in the VAG modelseries.

In combination with being non- or not enough profitable, VAG could consider not producing the A2 in the (near) future anymore.

Janf,

I agree with your thoughts. We know that the A2 hasn't been a sales success throughout Europe, and therefore why would VAG take a second chance when they have other avenues for a small car? It seems that AUDI is VW's real strong arm in the exec and high exec class, and their money should be spent wisely in this area.

P.S. Long live the A2. :D
