Jittery ride

Hi all,

This is my first post on what is a most excellent and informative forum. Sorry if this wittles on a bit.

Got my A2 in October last year, went to Plymouth from the Midlands to get it as it was the only one with open sky that was good for the money. Drove it home (a good 200 miles) and it was fine. However went to show it off to a mate and I burst the drivers front tyre mounting the kerb (at very low speed) outside his house.

I didn't realise until I had driven away and had driven for 5 miles at which point my flat tyre was steaming!! Since then I've had a trouble with the ride. At first it was pulling sharply to the left which has been corrected by sorting the tracking out but now it can get a wee bit twitchy at 70mph plus.

Any ideas why? Might it be a simple case of badly worn tyres or does it sound like it might need a Geometry Check or could it be something else?

I love the car and a few other niggles aside think its been a good buy, but I have to even putting the above problem aside the ride isn't the most serene I've had.

PS also realised that the tyre sealant goo, doesn't work with tears or gashes in the tyre wall and my A2 hasn't got a spare didn't come with one aparently.

Get the tracking professionally checked out, its not cheap but you might have upset things in this department.

Mine didnt come with a space saver got the goo stuff which I was told is out of date. Thinking of getting a space saver cost around £200 but i believe they can be obtained cheaper

If you've hit a kerb hard enough to burst a tyre, then you will have definitely done someting to the alignment or tracking.

Hi alexm,

I had an unfortunate incident with a badger a couple of years ago. The car needed a new compressor, bumper and some other bits and bobs. Anyway - when I got the car back from the Audi garage - I was convinced that the tracking was all out of alignment (as it appeared to pull to the left). I took it back to the garage, and they checked out the geometry. It was all within the correct tolerances.

I think that I was simply being overly senstive to the slightest pull to the left - when in fact it was just the natural camber of the road causing the issue. Since then - I have not noticed the issue. I regularly drive 3 different cars - so don't think that I have simply become accustomed to the pull.

As far as the twitchyness goes - it might be worth getting the full check in this case. As a matter of interest - did you install a different brand of tyre after the kerbing? Also, which size wheels do you have? When I had my work done, the garage were very critical of the default Pirelli P6000s that were on the car - said that they don't wear too well - adding to the unusualness.

Hay Ben

Im experiencing some slight twitching of the stearing wheel @ about 75 - 80 Im running pirelli p7000's could this be a common problem with tyre contact? I have often suspected that it was balencing. I have been putting up with the twitching for a month now, i also get the feeling its pulling to the left, however I have had it re-tracked and wheels balenced. Its going into the garage tomorrow to check out the balencing again. I hope the balencing is the case!keep you posted!

Thanks all for the informative advice.

Ben: The tyres on it are Pirrelli P6000's and they're 16 inch. I installed a replacement Pirrelli after the incident. However it is my understanding that VW atleast recommend Continentals as they are a better wearing tyre.

I only got the tracking sorted recently and it was quite far out so I'm thinking the problem could be uneven tyre wear. I'm gonna replace the front two with continentals and see if that helps. If not I'll have to get the full geometry check done.

The wierd thing is I literally mounted the kerb at less 5mph and the wheel was turning to run up onto the the kerb.

Primea2, what your experiencing is pretty much what I'm experiencing. Will be interested in what the garage tells you.

cheers
