just done cambelt... oh shyte!

At least next time I do this job it should only take 3-4 hours.

I have done this job about 10 times now. I did the A2 (again) at the weekend. From start to finish it took eight hours. Take your time and re-check everything. No prizes for rushing it and getting it wrong. What will you do with the time you "save"?

Couldn't agree more (since I got it wrong..twice!) whereas with the time I save next time.. hopefully can be working on old classic cars.. sooooo much more simple!!

Same tool as the PD VW engines i've done a couple on, sometimes those marks are faint!!

another tip, the rod tool that locks the cam, check this fully locates in the hole not just the first slot, (look at picture to confirm)

Think i'm going to do the 75bhp TDI this summer or sooner, do you need to lower and raise the engine to get to the lower pulley area or no? (as is the case on the 4 cylinder PD engines)

You have to raise the engine to remove the horizontal bolts that secure the engine mount to the engine block.

I managed to remove two of the horizontal bolts with the engine in its normal position. The third wouldn’t come out without moving the engine so lifted it out still loose in the casting. Put it in the casting loose to refit.
There was no other reason to lift / lower the engine.

The tool should go in right upto the plastic ball / handle. I alligned the cam sprocket to engine timing marks and the hold tool was going nowhere. Chamfered the end of the tool, still not having it. Ran a drill, exactly same diameter of tool, down the hole. Got it.
