Just driven 781 miles in 11.5 hours with a half hour wait for the Chunnel and 1.5 hours of lunch/refuelling stops.
Car was rammed to the gunnalls and we drove at an indicated 85-90, time averaged 82mph

Averaged A very respectable 32.6mpg

Forgot to say the car was the wife's Q7
Still not bad for about 3 tonnes fully loaded and travelling at speed.

That is pretty good. Assume you have a 3.0TDi?

I'm only getting 34 from the 2.0 Q5, but relatively speaking - its still very tight at 3k miles and a planned remap will see my figures creep towards 40 I hope.

Yes. It's the 3.0tdi, late 2008 with 40k on the clock. Just had fresh oil in preparation for this journey (it took 9.6 blinking litres of the expensive stuff- cripes)

Did a similar journey last year with a top box and averaged 24.6mpg

Lesson learnt. Don't use a top box

Re top box, have just bought my first one as the A6 saloon seems to have shrunk over the 5 years I've had it......

First trip with the box, 3 passengers and a boot full of camping kit to the Spa Grand Prix. 545 miles, 80-ish on the way out, 90+ on the way back (late for Ferry) and averaged 34.9mpg.

I'll take that as I thought it would be much worse, especially cruising at 95 in Belgium.

And Hooley.....pack lighter. You shouldn't need a top box with a tank that size. ;)

Lol
You've not met my wife
That was only 'essentials'. It was a ski trip for 5 people, including 3 children all their toys, pushchair, skis, poles and boots, gear, etc. NEEDED the top box then.
