Just recorded my best ever MPG

I was quite stunned at just how good my MPG has been over the past week, over 431 miles I averaged 69.83MPG (calculated - see link in sig for figures).

The interesting thing to take away from this is what was different this week to all those since the start of the year.. Because of the good weather, on my drive home I've tended to have the windows open and the climate control turned off.

Does it really make that much of a difference? It certainly looks that way given this week I used 28.08 litres over 431.3 miles, however the week prior I used the same amount of fuel (28.07 litres) but drove 372.3 miles (which still gave me 60.3 MPG).

Has anyone else noticed a similar trend?

Congratulations on your great MPG. As you suggest, turning off the A/C does make a difference and a typical figure for this is a 4 MPG gain. However as others have warned it is a good idea to have the A/C on from time to time to ensure it remains properly lubricated. One big difference to MPG that people sometimes do not realise is ambient air temperature - engines run much more economically on warm air; in my old Honda Insights you could easily gain 10MPG on a warm day and some other Insight owners went to the trouble of warm air modifications (running the air intake down to the catalytic convertor heatshield). The current rain and cooler air will unfortunately bring your next tank back down. Pump up your tyres and drive in fuel cut mode whenever possible to help keep the good figures up!

Pretty good. My best has been 72.8 even with teh air con on. I average low 60's (air con on) and mixed driving and up to 75 on motorways.

My computer's currently hovering around 62MPG (this was higher but it took quite a hit with the Nurburgring trip!). Given most weeks my MPG is around 60, this is where I expect the computer to settle in the long run. It was previously over optimistic given my car ran for almost 12 months with a resistor 'tuning box' fitted - this well and truly fooled the trip computer and at the time I had readings of 70MPG+ on the display!

My best was 72.2 which was going to and coming back from my sisters at Christmas, all motorway and A roads will very little traffic. The car was well full. It was however on the BP premiem deisel, if that makes a difference.
